To be willing to spend all that time in Columbia is still surreal. I think it was just Spurrier's pride that he didn't go home when he had the chance. He was a strange one. But an excellent coach.

I always heard three rumors about spurriers not returning to Florida.
1) masters membership if he went to usce
2) foley wanted him to apply and interview the same way all the other candidates did. Supposedly it rubbed spurrier the wrong way.
3) he wanted to do what no coach could ever do, win big at usce

This is true
Foley didn’t like spurrier because spurrier cared about winning and didn’t take mediocrity
Thankfully machen had the urban Meyer ties because foley would never have gone for that and Florida football post spurrier would’ve been full of losers like Zook, Muschamp, macewlain, Mullen and Napier due to the foleyism

My cousin played DB at UF in the 60's, supported the school, and played golf with Spurrier. He said Spurrier was mad at UF/AD because:
1. They wouldn't hang a banner for his team that won the SEC while on probation.
2. They didn't back him up when he accused Bowden/FSU of trying to hurt his QB.
3. They wouldn't listen to his complaint about having to play FSU the week before the SECCG.
