I considered 1985 for bama, but it just was not an important game and importance is part of naming the "greatest". Neither team was great in 1985 and nothing was on the line for either.

Same reason 1982 and 1989 didn't make the AU list though their importance to AU are right at the top of the list.

Auburn came into the game with an 8-2 record and a Top 10 ranking while Alabama came in with a 7-2-1 record.

Both teams were good.

For AU it was 1989. AU fans were crying before that game

I know, I was there in 1989 and at the GOAT tigerwalk.

It is a contender because bama was undefeated and going for a NC and AU was going for a 3rd straight SEC championship. It had the importance, but it just wasn't a great game. AU led pretty big and won by two scores.

The game ended on a questionable spot when the ball was spotted less than 1 inch short on a 4th down completion to Frank Sanders.

I was at this game and I believe after they ruled it short of the first down Patrick Nix ran up to the ref and accidentally bumped into him arguing the spot. I think he may have been ejected.

Well there's your problem.

You're a game on the schedule, and generally the IB isn't a terribly important game in the national scheme of things for both teams at the same time.

Other than "you can't afford to lose this game", but that would be the same circumstance regardless of whom the opponent was in the last regular season game of the year.

I was at that one as well. All hell broke loose when the ref said it was short. Nix did more than bump him too, damn near knocked the ref down.

Well, yeah. That is exactly why 1982 and 1985 are not on the list. No national importance.

1989 had national importance, but bama wasn't very competitive after halftime.

1989 would bump the 1971 game on the bama list if the roles were reversed, but their isn't room for it on the AU list.

And really 1993 would bump a game on the bama list as well with both teams being top ten and AU undefeated and bama with 1 loss, if the roles were reversed (bama winning).

The AU list is tougher to get on though.

in a vacuum 2013 is the "greatest"

when you put the whole picture together, 2010 takes the cake between the 2 imo.

I'm not old enough to appreciate 89 so wont comment.

Who cares about national importance? How many Iron Bowls have there been since the renewal where the stakes were high for both teams? And of the ones that mattered, how many of the games were actually good? The 1971 and 1989 games were certainly not classics.

The 2010 Iron Bowl really didn't matter for both teams either. Even if Alabama would have won they still would have gone to the Capital One Bowl to face Michigan State. The 1994 Iron Bowl didn't mean squat to Auburn in terms of championships because they couldn't go to post-season play.

If you get right down to it, only the 2013 Iron Bowl qualifies. And, as good as that game was, there have been others that were certainly just as thrilling. The 1996 and 1997 Iron Bowls were both classics. As were the 1982, 1984, and 1985 games. The all-time greatness of a game isn't dependent on the stakes invested in the game. Many people regard the 1982 Stanford-Cal game to be one of college football's all-time greatest games and that game didn't matter for shite.

As I have said about 5 times now, the criteria is a combination of what is at stake and how compelling the game turns out to be.

If you have one for bama that is "greater" according to my criteria, lay it out.

Otherwise, just shut up with the nonsense arguing.

Then I'd have to go with the 1990 Iron Bowl. The final score was 16-7 Alabama but the game was close all the way through. It was 10-7 at the half and 13-7 entering the final quarter of play. The stakes involved: who would control the state of Alabama for the next decade.

Alabama went on to go 7-3 against Auburn in the 1990s, while also using the victory as a platform to win 24 of their next 26 games, as well as an SEC and national title.

1985 and you know it. Bama winning the game on a 56 yard FG as time expired is a way cooler ending, than any of those fluke arse Auburn special team victories.

Ok, I'll bump 1971 for 1990 if other gumps agree that 1990 was a greater game for bama.

Pretty positive we lost for more reasons than that. I don't believe the missed field goal was the sole cause. What long return are you even talking about?
