A) he was told to look around. Auburn needs an offensive spark and needs to bring in fresh ideas
B) Rhett needs to spread his wings and get out of Gus' shadow. He played QB for Gus in HS and all but one year at Samford has spent his entire coaching career under Gus. Rhett's name is tied to Gus in the coaching world and he wants to forge his own reputation. Also I believe that their relationship going so far back causes Gus to still view Rhett as that HS kid or GA and not as a colleague and because of that Gus has always treated Gus as a yes man instead of an equal
As far as why UCONN I think it's a combination of timing with what jobs are open, Randy Edsall coming back who is a good coach, and a poor year on offense and nobody being sure of how he'll be without Gus all coming together to make this his best option
