Born in Greenville, Texas, Neyland attended Burleson Junior College in his home town for a year. He then transferred to Texas A&M University for a year before receiving an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York from Congressman Sam Rayburn.

Crazy thing, Sam Rayburn was born in Kingston, Roane County, TN which is about 40 miles west of Neyland Stadium.
His family moved from TN to Texas when he was five, settling in Windom, Fannin County. Windowm is about 40 miles north of Greenville.
