"Bowden: “They did want us, they did invite us to join the SEC. Everybody thought we would join. In fact, I thought we would but our administration — the president and others — wanted the ACC, which really was better for us. It would have been hard wading through that SEC. Too many good teams in there, boy. Oh, gosh. Oh, that would have been some great ball."

Bowden spoke the truth.

" I had always been an SEC fan. I did feel, however, that between the SEC and the ACC, the best road to a national title was through the ACC. A national championship was my number one goal every year. The SEC is so tough, top to bottom, that they beat up on each other week after week. In the '90's we played for the national title five times and won two. This proves my point."

Same song, second verse.

FSU administration intentionally chose the ACC because it would be an easier path to national championships. Now the FSU AD is throwing a hissy fit because going undefeated in that easier conference isn't respected.

Man, I still feel bad for FSU. Today was the same feeling I get when I know a boxing match was fixed.

They voted not to start the 12 team playoff this year.

Bobby Bowden himself just told you that FSU's success in the nineties was fabricated.

Throwing a fit and publicly stating they’re too good for the ACC didn’t do them any favors either. That said they got left out because of their game last night. They looked horrible against a bad Louisville team while Bama was beating the number one team and for the most part controlled the game.

This would have been at least twenty years ago.

And if you look at who typically wins the national championship, you can see he was wrong.

I think they went 77-3 in their first 10 years in the ACC. Those 90s FSU teams were loaded but no way they do that against the SEC.

He was right in the nineties, before the BCS, when he could easily go undefeated in a weak conference and be highly ranked in the polls. When FSU won the national championship in 1999, #17 Georgia Tech was the only other ACC team ranked at the end of the season. In 1993, the only other ranked ACC teams were #19 UNC and #23 Clemson.

And in the beginning years of the playoff era, Clemson proved him to still be right...one team can continually dominate that conference much more easily.

Exactly. Spurrier was hell on everyone in the 90's. Not to mention Bama had some strong teams, as did Auburn & Tennessee

Yeah, Spurrier was hell on everyone...and even Ol' Ball Coach managed to lose to Mike Dubose twice in the same season.

Dallas Turners penalty for legally tackling your boy Daniels was too. It wasn't roughing the passer at all. What a fabrication !

Yeah that muffed punt in the Swamp by darrell Jackson still haunts him I hear.
S.Alexander abusing LB Keith Kelsey and the defense sucked that too.

Then, Freddy Millions in the SECCG.

Just watch their game vs Louisville from last night, and then you'll realize they were not even a top 5 team. You'll feel a lot better.
