Longtime football coach Bill Arnsparger, who was LSU's head coach for three years and a Tulane assistant for two, has died. He was 88 when he died Friday morning at his home in Athens, Alabama.

Arnsparger coached LSU from 1984 to 1986, leading the Tigers to two Sugar Bowl berths and the 1986 SEC championship, the school's first since 1970. After that season, he resigned to become athletic director at Florida, where he hired Steve Spurrier.

I always liked him. Seems like there was something odd about his leaving LSU after only several years. Did he just not like coaching college ball with the recruiting and all?

I remember watching Arnsparger's teams at LSU. Those two years he ran into Nebraska in the bowl games were tough.

Then, he was gone and they turned it over to Mile Archer.

RIP, Coach Arnesparger.

Condolences to the Arnsparger & LSU families. He will never be known as a coach/Athletic Director in the SEC who shaped what was to come to the degree he should, however he hired a guy named Steve Spurrier from Duke University to coach the Florida Gators.

He won the SEC at LSU in 1986 for the first time in Baton Rouge in over 16 seasons. He also was a key man in the success of Don Shula with both the Colts and Dolphins.

Loved me some coach Arn ~
