Columbia built up around the campus before football was a thing. Building the stadium at the fairgrounds was out of necessity really.

We had one of those on-campus playing fields with some bleachers before Williams-Brice was built. However, there was no way a full stadium could have fit there.

in Columbia's defense, USC was established in the oldest state capital in the SEC as an extension of the legislature, so the campus started adjacent to the State Capital. our original campus, "the horseshoe" with the first separate college library building was the inspiration for jefferson's "lawn" at UVA. it was almost 70 years prior to the advent of college football (Rutgers-Princeton 1869), so no one had the forethought to set aside land for a stadium and parking for tailgating. LSU didn't move to Baton Rouge until after they started playing football, so they had a better idea of the space needed to establish a state university. in hindsight, we should have put the school in Charleston with a stadium overlooking the Ashley River and we would have 10 year waiting list.

It is a beautiful campus. Too bad it is in Columbia.

Was at dinner with niece that is a soph here and she was talking about the crime around here. Papers are talking about it again the morning. There is an opinion piece on page 4 in the Daily Gamecock and they are recommending students be allowed to bring mace (MACE) to the game for the walk home.

You have got to be shitting me. WTH is going on around here??

Guys, we fricked up building our stadium off-campus. It has some advantages and is getting better w/ the $$$ we've got, but it was a dumb mistake. Let's just accept it and move on.

It wasn't PRESENTED as an option. If we wanted to build it on campus we certainly could've done it. That's like sitting down at a restaurant and saying since steak isn't on the menu, it isn't an option for dinner. True, but if you got your arse up and went to the store and bought a steak you'd be eating steak.

College campus is fine but if that strange little man is anywhere within 100 feet of a grammar school he needs to detained.

It's overblown trident. Crime is down since I left usc in 2005. Now five points isn't safe, but it hasn't been for quite some time. That's why people with any sense go drink in the much nicer and safer vista area.

5 Points was fine until 2010, then shite hit the fan. I'm still not sure it's all that safe, but I haven't been back lately.

And why did no one run the POS down?

And you call yourselves a (non-bammer)SEC school?

No other campus in the sec compares to Fayetteville. My 4 years on the hill were the best 4 years of my life.

I'll be the first to admit, Columbia isn't Ann Arbor or Athens.... but Columbia is not as terrible as you're making it. Ask your niece, there's lots to do in Columbia.. and it's cheap. A college student should never be bored.

I graduated two years ago and every school year starts off like this.. a student gets robbed and you read about it for the next 5 days. Happens yearly. Unlike Athens, College Station, FYVille, Tuscaloosa, Auburn etc.. Columbia is an actual city. Cities have crime. I never felt unsafe at Carolina because I followed the rules. Yes, it's a college campus, but why are you jogging or going to the store at 3am? College freshmen don't know better, that's why they get robbed. By the time they're upperclassmen they would've learned to travel everywhere in groups of 3 after dark. Enjoy your visit. It can be a fun city if you give it a chance...
