Mitchell isn't a first rounder... He will not be SEC Pitcher of the Year... To say his stuff is as electric as Stratton is false.. I stand by what I said and the numbers and awards at the end of this year will back up what I say.

ETA: Why dont you just admit that you were really fired up cause opening day was coming up so you posted something that was a bit homerish... We've all done it.. Just admit it

Gotta say I agree with you here. He throws hard, but his offspeed stuff isn't nearly what Stratton's was/is. While I think he will have a decent year, I don't think he will even be the best on our staff.

Link? Neither was Stratton before his junior year began. Mitchell projects as a 5th-7th rounder right now -- without having proven a damn thing in college. You REALLY don't think we have another first round pitcher on our staff right now? I'd dare say there are multiple guys with that potential -- and it's been shown that Butch Thompson can develop them. Hell, Woodruff didn't even throw this weekend and he was a 5th rounder out of highschool.

Did Stratton accomplish this his FR or SO year?

Read the scouting reports from before the LSU series last year that was essentially Stratton's coming out party and get back to me.

What did you say?

You need to learn the difference between having "just as good of stuff" and "being just as good of pitcher". Stuff = physical potential.

Know who else had tremendous stuff? Devin Jones. But he was a mental midget that couldn't put it together with the bright lights on. And he sucked in college because of it.

Jesus Engie... I'll ban bet you that Evan Mitchell doesn't start 9 SEC weekends out of 10... Loser can't post the entire baseball postseason... That goes from SEC tournament all the way to the CWS final.. What do you say ?

If he get's injured or gets in trouble and gets suspended the bet is off... I certainly hope nothing like that happens to him

I wouldn't have made this bet with Chris Stratton at this point last year. Why would I make it with Evan Mitchell right now?

You are really struggling with understanding the difference between potential talent and realized talent.

Stratton didn't draw his FIRST start until the LSU series last year. He was used in middle relief in all of the first four weekends.

Nevermind that we have -- what is most likely -- 5 legit SEC starters on this roster without even looking at the freshmen that could step up.

I'll just take your word for it... And Devin Jones fricking sucked.. I don't care what he showed you during a bullpen session when there wasn't a batter in the box... His ERA was like 8.25 during his career... That's not good.. Doesn't matter how well you could pull the string on your slider when there wasn't a hitter in the box.. Jones's biggest accomplishment in college was making the SEC academic honor roll

Exactly. That is the difference between "stuff" and actual success.

My initial(and continued) thought is simply about how good Evan Mitchell has the POTENTIAL to be. Doesn't mean he will necessarily ever do a damn thing. I certainly have yet to see the breakthrough game that tells me he has arrived -- like I did in the first SEC series of Stratton's JR yr(LSU).

I compared him to Stratton because that is who he is most similar to physically -- in ALL of his pitches, movement, velocity, etc... The "growing up" mentally is the part that is still wait and see.

And I only talked shite about that quote twice.. Not 4 or 5 times.

It takes a really great pitcher on the collegiate level to have a WHIP under 1.. That's the most important pitching stat in baseball imho and it's gonna be difficult for someone to repeat that... Stratton was special... Like you said.. There's at least 4 legitimate Friday starter candidates on State's team... Who knows ? Maybe State has a starter post a WHIP of .87 this season.. But that's doubtful... Congrats again on the sweep.

Engie, I wish you had been right. We need a Friday starter right about now. As good as Pollo has done, now way in hell he should be our Friday night guy. At least he has stepped up and made the best of it. Outside of him, i don't feel confident with any of our starters taking the mound.

So my question is, what in the frick happened to these guys? I wanna blame somebody damnit!

and you know this needed a bump

Hey, I'll be the first to admit I was wrong on Mitchell. Dude loses his frigging mind when the lights come on. An unhittable 96 that loses his mind in actual games is about all he appears he'll ever be. Shame. His stuff is so good that it wouldn't take perfection for him to have success at this level. That's hurt how good this team could have been this year.

The real nutcracker though is what has happened with Woodruff this year. With that "injury" and Mitchell's lack of mental progression early on, I figured out pretty quick that we were not going to be elite without one of them stepping up -- and have said as much many times. Both those are elite arm talent guys(as is Lindgren). Graveman, Pollo, Fitts, Cox, etc...not so much. Good news is that Woody will be eligible for a medical redshirt, should we choose to use it -- but I doubt it matters, because chances are pretty good he goes pretty early in the draft next year.

Lindgren getting dinged several times throughout the year and having minor arm trouble has simply magnified what's gone down with the other two guys...

In a perfect world, Woody would have been healthy, and we could have gone with him, Graveman, and Lindgren -- 3 very talented pitchers that, stylistically, could not be more different -- 2 of which are early round MLB talents...

Instead, we're left fighting injuries on the hill and using a makeshift rotation -- directly after doing the same thing in the field last year. The freshman class we've got coming should do alot to alleviate this issue in the future though. Could not be more excited about some of those pitchers, especially Dakota Hudson(cross your fingers on the draft)...

Is Evan still projected as a 5-7 rounder?

Last time I checked.

MLB will take a chance on an elite arm talent like him -- especially one that can show them command in a controlled environment(which he does). They seem to think they can get the mental side in line through sports psych -- which I hope they can. Seems to have worked with Devin Jones fwiw.

Find it pretty inexcusable that we haven't hired him one last year to be honest with you...
