Nah, there have been plenty of t-shirt beakers talking shite up here to me in the meantime
I mean, shite talk is shite talk and I expect it from all fans, be they alums, sidewalk, or bandwagon.
I just get to laugh harder if a sidewalk/bandwagon fan tries to tell me which institution is better academically

Any man who cares why I am a fan of the teams I am is a ****.

I would wager that the biggest trolls here are non-alums.

Fan Hierarchy:
1) Alumni
Large Gap
2) Born and grew up near the school
3) Having an immediate relative who attends the school
Anything else is a filthy bandwagon casual.

I can support this. I was a Bama fan for the longest time because I was born there. Now I'm an alumni and a happy Hog fan.

I have 25 years worth of canceled checks lying out here on the sidewalk.

I think being a fan (re: fanatic) of an athletics program has more to do with the emotional investment you have toward that team.
I know plenty of alumni who couldn't tell you the incoming freshmen or the usual starting line up for our baseball team. And on the flip side I know plenty of people who didn't go to LSU, yet have donated way more money to the TAF than some alumni.
Is it possible to be a fan of one schools academics but a fan of another's athletics? I think so.

As far as this site goes, a sidewalk and bandwagon fan is one who crosses the line in their fandom and starts saying things to attack the actual University instead of just the sports teams associated with that University.
Attacking a football, basketball and baseball "team" is one thing. But saying things like "their students suck, and I wish that whole place would burn to the ground"... when you are mad about loosing a sports game against them really lets everyone know what type of fan you are.
I can only say that a real alumnus is a shareholder. They have invested both money and time into that University. That is pretty serious to them no matter how good or bad their Basketball of Football team is doing.
Someone will have to give me the definitions of the other two because I don't want to judge.
Regardless, Football is fun for everyone. So just have fun with it.

There is a very distinctive line between education and sports. They seem closely related because all schools have sports...but they could not be more far apart in mostly everything else.
Like I said...just enjoy the games, no matter if you actually attended that particular school, or not.

What do you consider to be bandwagon or sidewalk fans?
They're not fans at all. They follow the success of certain teams, and not the teams per se.
A non-alum does not automatically qualify one as a bandwagon/sidewalk fan. It's a loyalty issue, through both the good times and the bad.

That's the way I've always seen it. I have respect for the true Gumps that stuck by Bama during the dark days. Being a fan takes loyalty, and loving your team no matter what.

You are talking about a Football team though. The University is the whole reason for that team in the first place. And every year, the actual students of that University pay fees to support that team.
Now, if you are a person that never actually attended that University but wants to donate $50,000 in 4 years for just "cheering for your team"...then please feel free to do so.
Something tells me that a $5.00 T-Shirt from Wal-Mart or a $3.00 decal here and there by "the sidewalk fans of LOYALTY through the DARK DAYS" is a little different as far as true support goes.

Just about every fan I have ran across on game day that poorly represented their school were students and future alum. Just saying

It's worth noting that at Kentucky, our athletics department makes a sizeable donation to the academic side of the university. UK athletics is its own entity and isn't necessarily beholden to the university itself to make an annual donation; common sense says they have a symbiotic relationship and benefit from doing so. My point is, there are a lot of improvements being made in the classroom and via on campus projects that are due almost entirely to athletic donations, much of which comes from non-alum season ticket holders for football and basketball.
I went to UK for 3 years. I was born in Lexington and raised here. My family goes back 3 generations of UK graduates. I've had season football tickets going on 8 years counting this coming season (I'm only in my 30's.). I received a solid job offer while in school, accepted it, and never finished my degree. I also donate to the UK alumni association. In short, I dont think I owe anyone an explanation for my fandom simply because I can't call myself an alum.
