This. Not sure what I confusing about that. Bama claims a few from before the universally recognized nine of the "modern era".

Either way, 9 is more than everyone else if you use the "modern era" as your standard. I'll take having more than everyone else and be happy with that.

What if the standard is NCAA recognized and NCAA awarded National Titles, how many does Bama have then?

Pretty sure ESPN is only counting AP titles.

I'm sure they count the 1973 UPI title where Alabama is "national champion" and Notre Dame is the AP Champion after beating Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.

Surely none of you clowns have tried to convince any Notre Dame fans that the Tide was National Championin 1973 ?

Did Alabama and Notre Dame play one another in 1966?

Can we just go with 9 then to clear up confusion from now on? It's still impressive but doesn't feed into that negative stereotype given to Bama fans

A negative stereotype that is also practiced by Tennessee, USC, Notre Dame, and Michigan... among many others.

Pretty sure Notre Dame didn't play in Bowl games back then.

Take away '73 and we're still tied with Notre Dame for the most. Either way...we have more than any other team in a conference which we own.

Ohio State's "1970" title is one of the more lame ones out there.

I will always wonder why people refuse to understand that bowls didn't count back in the day. They were like a pro bowl, just a reward.

If we are being consistent here:

ND has 8, not the 11 they claim

USC has 7, not the 11 they claim

Michigan has 2, not the 11 they claim

Bama has 9, not the 14 they claim

Tennessee has 2, not the 6 they claim

Pitt has 2, not the 9 they claim

Minnesota has 4, not the 7 they claim

Ohio State has 5, not the 7 they claim

JUST TO BE FAIR

The NCAA's FBS history page lists 12, if I counted correctly

Still not as bad as the national title Tennessee claims from 1967. They finished 9-2 (same as we did in '41). The only difference is....the AP didn't really become the end-all, be-all poll until 1950 or so.

Excellent point, and it should quietly close this thread.

Did you hear that they said since they combined polls they have 9? You must be deaf.
