The previous two coaches LSU hired, were not, at the time, Homerun hires. In fact, many LSU fans were very skeptical when Nick Saban's and Les Miles' names were announced as new head coaches. But both turned out well. Each a national title and several really good years, without even one bad year.

I have no idea if O will fair anywhere near so well as they did, but if he does, my hats off to a guy who rose from the ashes not once but twice to achieve greatness.

Even if he does bad, we can at least all look forward to many many Ed O gifs of the highest quality for as long as he lasts =)

Are you seeking reassurance from the SECRant?

Ed will be fine, maybe even better than Les.

With the exception of maybe a very few schools, every college out there would trade those same years (Saban + Miles years) for ours. Our worst year was 8 wins. That is not a bad year.

Les did an absolute shitastic job in 2013. 19 of our 22 starters from that team are on NFL rosters right now, and we had 3 HORRIBLE losses. Dumbest gameplan I've ever seen against a horrible Alabama secondary, and half of Ole Miss' team was in a wheelchair when they beat us.

2014? garbage all the way around

2015? Holy hell

2016? hide all sharp objects from me

Nah. No one really could do that. He may win, he may not. I was just remembering the negative talk when Saban and Miles were hired. It sounded very much like the talk now. I figured some others might chime in as to whether they remembered it the same way back then or not.

LSU fans think not fielding an offense for 8 of 11 seasons and competing for 2nd or 3rd in the west because of it means not having a bad year.

Dude. Not saying it wasn't time to make a change. But while 2014-2016 were not up to expectations, they were certainly not "bad years." No losing or even break even years. The 90's were bad. Miles worst years were disappointing, but not bad.

One problem:

Look at the record of O as a head coach. Nobody in the country would hire him as a HC.... except LSU. Congratulations.

Saban and The Hat has success prior to going there and other schools wanted them.

We had the highest paid staff in America and top 10 talent those years. Why can't we consider a slew of 8-9 win seasons a colossal failure? Those were really bad seasons with the talent LSU had.

I remember the talk back then.

I also remember the talk when Alabama hired Saban...he won't stay longer than a couple of years, won't be able to recruit like he did at LSU, won't ever be able to win at the level he did at LSU, jump ship for more money, never have an undefeated season, has no loyalty, etc.

Alabama will never start a black QB, Saban will never start a freshman QB.

Hell, just a couple of years ago folks on here were saying the game had passed him by and he would never be able to evolve/adjust to college football's new fast-paced/HUNH/spread-option offenses.

We did. Miles is looking for a job now. But for reference as to what an actual "bad year" might look like, how about Ole Miss this year? They had an offense that was far more productive than ours, and a defense that the past couple years was decent to really good. But still they ended up 5-7 and not going to even a low-tier bowl. That is real disappointment.

Ole Miss shouldn't be the measuring stick we use.

Their defense suffered the same fate as every other successful team. They left to make a lot of money.

I'm not saying Les had terrible seasons. I'm just saying 8-4 with 3 cupcakes on the schedule isn't want it used to be.

Further Les wasn't fired because he wasn't getting ok results. He was fired because he missed on offense 8/11 years here which probably cost a few championships. When given the warning, he dug his heels in and continued to pay Cam Cameron 1.2 mil a year.. instead of giving him a raise. That was Les's answer.

Was just pointing out what a "bad year" actually is. What we have been experiencing is not living up to expectations. Years of "what could have been." If we had the luck Auburn had a couple years ago, we would be in the playoff this year.

Similar to Mike DuBose hire by Bama or Gene Cheeze-it by the Barn.
