Does anyone think the No Targeting rule has anything to do with the seeming increase in ACL injuries last season? Just wondering...

Nope, they're just a fluke.

quote:

Mark Richt believes the spate of knee injuries that struck his team this season were a fluke and nothing more.

Most of the injuries, including that of record-setting quarterback Aaron Murray, occurred while changing direction, which Georgia's coach said is unfortunately common in athletics. If a training program existed to prevent such injuries, Richt said the Bulldogs' strength and conditioning staff would certainly follow its methods.

As to targeting, for UGA at least were most of these on the offense? And were they by themselves or in the process of being tackled low? idk, just asking.

Keith Marshall's was. He took a shot straight to the side of his knee against UT.

and all of them were on offense, some were non-contact though. The only one on defense was Reggie Wilkerson's early in the summer

Were UGA fans saying this when Grantham had a top 5 D a few years ago?

No. Why would we? Did you think Chizik was a horrible coach after AU won a national championship?

He has proven himself to be a clown over time.

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't the vast majority of the injuries they sustained this past season all on the offensive side of the ball? And didn't the UGA offense STILL end up with better national stats than what the UGA defense ended up having?

You are correct on all counts.

I think that the targeting rule made some players go for low tackles, causing a lot more lower body injuries.

the targeting rule has its place.

but it's kind of hard to enforce. it's smart to have the replay but if it's not a penalty, it's just a hit, you kind of have to pick up the flag.

i guess it's a topic for another thread.

Here's the thing about the UGA 2005 defense, it ended the season #5 and did it's job. Held teams to 20.6 points per game.

But maybe Grantham wasn't the reason, the opponents in 2011 on the 10 win run including my beloved Auburn, kind of stunk. I think 0-4 against ranked teams (allowed avg of 39 points/g) and 10-0 against unranked?

But I think a lot of us remember the Boise St game and the UGA players patting their helmets wanting out of the game in the first quarter. I remember the announcers talking about it.

It just added to the question of why does UGA get so much talent and they come in and have a outstanding freshman year and then plateau if not digress but then are picked up by the NFL? What's going on year 2 to 3 sometimes 4?

If I was Georgia, I'd be irritated about that, but I'm not, so I like it, which if I was Georgia, I'd be irritated about that too.

By my count, there's been 1 game we overachieved, 1 where we underachieved, and pretty much every other UGA/AU game under Richt went about how it was supposed to. Not sure how you can call richt an underachiever vs Auburn.

You didn't read my post then. I said at the beginning Richt has done well against AU.

we do have an area thats planned for any future indoor facility, but its across campus, by foley field i think, dont quote me on that. Richt wants one, so we just win a natty or the sec, one in the same most years. and Richt should get his wish. As of now we cancel practices or drive all the way to flowery branch during bad weather. plus you can hide practices, dont hear about spying much anymore, but im sure it happens.
