I've never heard him say anything like that. He's very cynical. He'll give praise when it's due, but he's much more in his comfort zone when he's ragging on someone or something. He was relentless against Shula, Gottfried, etc., and basically helped Bama get Saban by ragging on Rich Rod's wife so hard that they turned down the job.

Incorrect, Gary is expert analyst. Verne says it himself, he's there to provide color and not football knowledge.

Finebaum is a Tennessee plant to make Alabama people look more stupid than Tennessee people.

So far he's earning his paycheck.

A color commentator (color analyst, analyst, summariser) is a sports commentator who assists the play-by-play announcer, often by filling in any time when play is not in progress.[1][2] The color analyst and main commentator will often exchange comments freely throughout the broadcast, when the play-by-play announcer is not describing the action.[3] The color commentator provides expert analysis and background information, such as statistics, strategy and injury reports on the teams and athletes, and occasionally anecdotes or light humor. Color commentators are often former athletes or coaches of the sport being broadcast.[4]

He really does do a good job with the interviews. That's the only time I listen. The second he starts taking callers, it's off to classic rock.
Yep. It's weird. 90% unbearable redneck fan horseshite, 10% fantastic interviews

He knows very little about sports... doubt he every played any sport beyond kick ball in elementary school.

Was a sports writer at UT, but grew up a Bama fan. Went to UT due to a scholarship.

He was basically local, but Updyke and Cam made him a celebrity. He pushes the Bama agenda....

I thought he played left tackle for Bama under Bear in the early eighties, but I could be wrong.

he would injure himself hauling water on to the field..

as I've said before, and you fools need to listen..

Espn owes us(the SECN) much more than Pawl all afternoon every day in the offseason.

He is a genius at broadcasting in the heart of SEC country and understands how to twist the screws of the insecure fan bases. He is the best in the business at what he does. But he is only flaming and trolling so don't take his opinion seriously.

And Paul is a Tennessee grad.

Don't let his paid callers fool you. He does know a good bit, and connected to a lot of people in the SEC. He was also a very good reporter and good at interviews.

20 or so years ago, George Lapides used to have a Football Roundtable kind of thing on in Memphis.. I think Thursday afternoons for a couple hours. Would be he and 5 or 6 other sports hosts conferencing in and talking football. Finebaum was one of the others. He always was very knowledgeable then, nothing like the circus side show act he is now.

Troof.

Paul is truly a master of dry wit.

So, more football knowledge than Derek Dooley. That's what you're saying.

I stand corrected, I reversed what I heard him say during a radio interview a couple of years ago. He called a fellow commentator after getting a golf assignment and told the colleague that he knew very little about golf. Colleague calibrated him by saying "that's not the role that you play". Also told Verne that "you provide the headline", I confused color with headline. My bad.

People saying he's good at interviews? What interviews? The guy always looks like he's about to dry heave during an interview. Super awkward. Nothing learned. Forced and contrived, non-organic interviews.

The show is awful. I'm not sure how the SEC Network can't find better programming for 4 hours every day.
