That's a basketball thing, or at least it should be.

Been going to Aggie games for 20 years and never seen it. Saw it for my first time at a Colorado road game. I asked the guy what the hell he was doing and he said it added to the noise. I laughed. He was serious. I guess it is louder than a pom pom.

My son does but he's only 15 months old.

I've seen it done at UF in the student section when the score starts to get out of hand.... been a while since I've seen it.

I'd always heard that it was supposed to be a noisemaker. I've seen Michigan fans refer to it as something they do on "key plays" which is fricking sad
You are thinking of Michigan State. My mom's side of family are from Michigan and I was actually born in Lansing. The Spartans do it as a way to respect their heritage as being an automobile manufacturing town. They do it to video clips of 300 at beginning of game when Leonidas does the whole professional soldier monologue with the dude from another city-state. Instead of the Spartans responding with the 3 spear thrusts on the movie all the Spartans at Michigan shake their keys.

I never thought it added noise.
Always assumed it was just mockingly telling the visitors to start heading to the car

I realize some might do it in a 4th quarter,
UF if they are up at the start of the 4th.

I never heard of it before I went to an A&M/UTx game in Austin. It was during RC's decline, and we came up short. As I was walking back to my car, many horns were jingling their keys at me. Had no idea what message they were trying to convey.

Our student section only does it at basketball games during free-throws

No. But some fans have copied the Steelers Terrible Towel (or is it the Twins homer hanky?).

Oh...expect UF students this year to be jingling their keys at USC section in 4th qt as it becomes obvious that the Gators will prevail.

I had always assumed it to mean "nah-nah, naaaah-nah. nah-nah, naaaah-nah HEY HEEEEY HEY! You guys aren't very good at organized sports"

I think handing out vuvuzelas would be a nice alternative.
