Unsporting to feel otherwise, to my way of thinking.
Should have told the UPI.

But you're projecting more modern methods of crowing a champion on the poll era.

Absolutely. All teams do.

For the younguns who think the poles based off at least the BCS here's the story, again:

The darling of northern college football was ND. Until the early 70's Notre Dame DID NOT PLAY IN BOWL GAMES. University policy.
Well, to make Father so and so happy at ND since his team couldn't win a conference title or National title it was agreed by the big city northern papers, known as United Press International to award their national title BEFORE the bowls. This made the Catholics very happy. The AP did what they AP does to this day and awards them after the games.
It was decided, to make Father so and so happy that the UPI poll would be the other major poll (hence why there were so many split champions for all those years). In 1973 ND won the AP but Alabama won the UPI. EVERY team that won a UPI title claims it. USC won a ton of those before bowl game titles and they claim every last one. Same with ND who did not play in a bowl game but won the 1966 title in BOTH polls ( that still blows my mind). Texas claimed 1969 after the Arkie reg season game, etc., etc, etc. Capisce??
Now, I know this isn't what you want to hear because it doesn't fit your agenda as Bama claims all these pre-bowl titles but as outlined, thats just the system we had and yes, Bama and everyone else did as well. Read up on it on this internet thing and you will understand but that would be reading something you don't want to see so I understand.

Now to the screw jobs.
ND and Mich state are 1 and 2. Bama is 3. ND and MSU tie the final reg season game. UPI awards the title ND before and AFTER the bowl despite Alabama routing Nebraska in the Sugar Bowl and being the only undefeated untied team in football AND played in a bowl game when ND did not.

1977- Texas is number 1. Oklahoma is 2, Bama 3, Michigan 4, ND 5 when Jan 1 Bowl games roll around.
Number 1 UT loses to 5 ND
Number 2 OU loses to Arkie
Number 3 Bama BEATS Ohio State 38-6
Number 4 Michigan loses
Number 5 ND beats Texas

Number 5 jumps to number 1.

Don't forget, Alabama was #1 in both polls to begin the '66 season. Preseason #1, went 11-0, finished 3rd. Makes perfect sense.....said No one ever

The polls used to award the national champoinship before bowl games. There are lots of teams that won the national championship via a major poll at the end of the regular season only to lose their bowl game.

Bowl games were viewed largely as "exhibition" games for a long time. It was only around the 60's and 70's people began viewing them more as meaningful post-season games that should matter.

hell, the NCAA didn't even count bowl game stats until the 90's.

That was the system, if you think the system was retarded, fine. Over time people thought it was dumb too, so they changed it.
