Yes and no. As an Ole Miss fan pointed out, not for recruiting purposes, otherwise thr Egg bowl is such a huge thing in the state. It was a game every Thanksgiving night that got a lot of exposure.

The thing is, the state of Mississippi is so small and until recently when Southern Miss tanked there were too many schools to spread that talent on. If we had one big University in state (like Lsu -they have no instate competition) then we'd probably kick a lot of arse every year. There is a lot of NFL talent in Mississippi, but the state is too small to split it up like we do.

Man, if Clemson and SC pulled a UT/A&M and quit playing this whole state would explode.

Some forget but it almost happened.

Then the state legislators got together and made it law that we must play one another in all sponsored sports each academic year.

We had that one little hiccup in the series after the battle and the bloodshed ... but then it was made law that we will always play until the end of time.

For two years straight the sips deliberately lost 7 games so they wouldn't play us in a bowl.

Last year, they purposely lost to Northern Iowa so they wouldn't play us in the NCAA tournament.

Last season, they deliberately failed to make the NCAA baseball tournament so they wouldn't be the 4 seed in our region.

As a Hog fan no. We can play and pay cupcakes but not ASU. Dumbass old thinking.

True. Mississippi is #1 for NFL players per capita. Unlike LSU and Arkansas, Every other school has to fight with in-state rival for recruits.

You're describing Auburn fans perfectly with their REC paranoia.

You see fans of other schools, especially LOLSU, bring up the REC and refs and shite more than AU fans.

CFB wouldn't be what it is without the Iron Bowl. Love having an in-state rival.

UK, OTOH, we've always had a two sport rivalry, share most of our border with them and used to have a trophy that desperately needs to come back.

Yes, the Beer Barrel was the symbol of a once heated rivalry between UK and UT. Sadly, the SEC and UT kept advancing in football while UK stayed focused on basketball. The two-sport rivalry was collateral damage as our football program declined and our basketball program ascended.

Then Louisville came onto the scene as a major power in both sports and a natural rivalry was born. It has become white hot in the last 20 years and the UK/UT rivalry seems like a distant memory.

It's not bad. It's like having a little brother who finds Jesus every time he goes to rehab. You don't want him around him around your kids when he's dirty, but he's annoying as hell when he's clean. Mostly you just wish he'd grow up and get his act together.

That analogy seemed strangely personal.

I see Auburn as a thorn in the side but I enjoy the rivalry despite some painful memories. Both programs strive for greatness in turn making both much better in the process.

We always dream about LSU vs Tulane '98, but unfortunately, LSU didn't schedule Tulane that year, so we'll never know what would have happened.

I actually think they would have won that year. They were solid as frick.

The linebeards at Whorehopper U are a paranoid bunch. They are still whining about UK's "unfair advantage" as the flagship school in the Commonwealth. Since their promotion to P5 status, some of their collective insecurity has faded but it's still fun to listen to them on their call-in shows and read their forums. You'd think a UK mafia was trying to undermine their school and its programs.

Honestly I hate them so much I just don't deal with them. I don't really run into Louisville fans in my day-to-day because I don't volunteer at methadone clinics.

never knew Louisville and Kentucky had the rivalry love/hate thing. Pretty cool

I don't understand your response. I guess my question is... what did you think the relationship was?
