Bob Iger continues to shake things up at the House of Mouse, and his next move could be selling the company's flagship broadcast network ABC, all but spelling out the end of the broadcast era as we know it.

Disney is in talks with Nexstar Media Group, the country's largest TV station owner, to sell the ABC network and stations, Bloomberg first reported, citing people with knowledge of the discussions.

ABC is meant to be the showcase network for the new ESPN/SEC broadcast deal starting next year. ABC would be home to the primetime game of the week and SECCG. Disney CEO Iger has labeled ESPN as a core property of Disney moving forward although he wants more emphasis on streaming and has signaled a willingness to sell a stake of ESPN. Would be curious what happens with the conference deal down the line

The SEC got 100% buttfricked in the ESPN deal.

Not 90%, not 98%, but 100%.

Butt fricked.

Big Ten on FOX, NBC, CBS and getting constantly promoted during NFL games.

SEC on streaming pay per view.

That’s the world we will soon be in. Horrible deal.

Could be the Beginning of The End for DIS. Big chunk of cash needed next year for Hulu. ESPN might have to support its football contractual obligations without ABC's viewership, which is nearly double ESPN's for big games. Could get ugly fast for Iger. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy....

Every local station owned by Nexstar has been off the air on AtT U-verse and Direct TV due to contract negotiations. And very long extended periods of time. I’m so glad I bought the antenna to still catch those local stations.

My hunch is Disney is paring down their lines of business to prepare for an acquisition by Apple. Iger has a close relationship with Apple. Use to be on their board.

Apple wants the Disney movies and live sports for their streaming platform. I don’t think they give a damn about their holding in terrestrial television.

I’m interested to see what they do with parks and resorts. Doesn’t really fit Apple’s interest.

It’s a good move by Disney, they need to start getting out of the streaming business while they can sell it before the entire thing crashes.

If you are paying close attention, the entire streaming industry is headed for the same fate as the music industry.

Hundreds of billions of dollars chasing the streaming model was an obvious mistake before it even happened. Netflix was the successful anomaly, not the new model.

The music industry is a solid analogy. The difference is that I think/hope that we can backtrack with the film industry.

I agree—I think the B10’s deal with 3 networks was a masterclass in marketing. All networks have a vested interest in pushing B10 viewership and they have pre and post game shows running wall-to-wall. We have ESPN and ABC in an era of cord cutting. Why not diversify and get in front of as many viewers as possible? I think the B10 will slowly but surely build itself into an able competitor on the football field to the SEC as recruits start to perceive it as the best conference.

The streaming industry is incredibly lucrative, it's just a crowded space.

What are you talking about? Streaming is here to stay. What in the world would replace it? Cable? LOL

Their streaming service went from $2B to $8B in 3 years. They're shedding ABC for a reason - traditional cable and television networks are hemorrhaging money.

The lake that used to be making a good living in the music industry withered into a puddle and the level of talent followed suit.

I wasn’t clear. It has replaced cable for television viewing. Not sure it’s a better business model but it’s not a huge loss either way and what’s done is done.

The real mistake is putting first run films on your own streaming platform. All it’s doing is killing the film industry which is Disney’s bread and butter.

Probably why DISH can't come to terms with ABC. Not that I care (yet). It's a deer camp so I don't see much. If I need to, I can stream it on my ESPN app on my CSpire account.
