Did Dak ever win a meaningful game at State?

Local radio show is discussing it right now.
He won a Egg Bowl or two, right? Thoughts?
They’re currently blaming Mullen for all of Dak’s big losses. His NFL coaches have let him down as well. Poor guy.

He beat LSU and you would have thought it was the Super Bowl.

He played a big role when they beat us in 2013. We were 8-5.
Speaking of 8-5, that’s the best record of an SEC team Dak beat. Their three top ten wins in 2014 were all against teams who finished 8-5.
So to answer your question, yes, it always means a lot at State to win 9-10 games in a season, beat LSU, beat Auburn, beat Ole Miss, win a bowl game, etc.

I believe they got ranked 1st for the weekend of that game, lost, and then slid
Maybe not first but it was like the highest rank they'd gotten in decades or somethin

quote:2014, we beat A&M and Auburn that thrust us into #1 for a 5 week reign. Closed out the "We Believe" season losing to Alabama, Ole Miss and Orange Bowl (Ga Tech). So, yes. There were meaningful wins. Plus, we were the 1st team to be #1 in the BCS balloting.

You mean Playoff Rankings. BCS began in 1998 and ended in 2013.

There was a three game run where State beat LSU, A&M, and Auburn - all top 10 teams at the time, in three weeks. That's why State got to #1.
The argument is all three teams ended up being 8-5 on the season. State lost 25-20 at Alabama that year and dropped to #4 heading into the Egg Bowl. They lost 31-17 and were never in the game after mid-way through the third quarter. They ended #7 and went to the Orange Bowl and got blasted by Georgia Tech, the surprise ACC champion. Ended #11 on the season.
The next season, they went 9-4, but 0-4 against ranked teams.
Dak played in four games that were late season meaningful games to get to Atlanta and went 0-4. Two chances to get to the playoff and he was 0-2. One NY6 game and he was 0-1. An argument can be made that while he was the primary reason State had a good run in the mid 2010s, he did not win the meaningful game.

Pretty typical Mullen stuff. Beat teams you should beat, lose to teams you should lose to.
TBH I get that vibe about Kiffin right now.

Mississippi State was ranked three weeks at #1 then lost.

Good post. That’s a more-than-fair analysis.

Five weeks. won 3 games and had a bye week before losing to Alabama. State was actually 5-2 that season as a top 4 team.

Moo St won a couple big games early season over ranked teams and ended up the first #1 team in the CFP era. Then promptly fell apart.
Fun fact - in his entire career, Dan Mullen never won a regular season game when his team and his opponent were ranked, but his team was ranked higher. In other words, in ranked games that he was supposed to win, he lost all of them. This track record was well established in 9 season at Miss St and yet Scott Stricklin still hired him at UF.
