but it was pretty clear from the start that the D knew something, they never showed and had zero energy

This is just stoopid, no coach would intentially tank a game, especially if they were in contract negotiations. When would hire someone who purposefully tanked a game. That goes against being a competitor, which is a paramount trait looked for in a coach. If a coach would not compete to his best ability every game then he isn't going to ever be elite.
