Mizzou is a weird one. It almost fits but not quite. It does border Arkansas and barely touches Kentucky and Tennessee, but most of it is contiguous to Yankee Midwest states like Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas. Plus, in no universe are Kansas City or St. Louis considered southern cities. Southeast Missouri and the Ozarks is fine but the rest of the state talks funny and thinks beef brisket is barbecue.

Fans care about sports
When a fan is called a southerner it is taken as a compliment not an insult
Fries served without mayo at restaurants
Folks are nice and not dicks, even if wearing opposite school colors

In the southeast, alumni/student populations identity has a strong connection to football team. Is a Flagship school or large land grant school.

I’ve traveled a lot of places for work. All over SEC country as well as the Midwest, and north east. Because of the lack of NFL teams with rich tradition all of our eggs are generally in one basket. SEC football. The closest non “southern” teams would likely be Texas schools as they have some really passionate plans. They also seem to align with a lot more of our values. That said, traditional “southern” values that I was raised on seem to be in a lot of rural areas they just have a different accent. One this. I can say that’s shocking, the general perception of the south is that we are racist rednecks that are intolerant of others. While those folks are in every part of the country; in my experience, the south is by and large less racist than almost every state I have visited, with Ohio likely being the worst.

Why do Texas fans feel the need to justify why they are here by trying to knock A&M?

Part of getting into the club is knowing who the easy targets are.

Missouri is hard to figure out. KC is a midwestern city. St Louis is a Northeastern city. South of I-44 is very southern. You talk to people native to each of these areas and hear the differences in their accents, even.
