Wolken - Possible CFB Hires

Would be a pain in the arse of the rest of the SEC West, runs a system that can overcome some of the disadvantages you face as being one of the less talented teams in a talented division, could possibly get through any sort of difficult probation easier due to style of play and specialized recruiting.

I'm sure the first thought would be hell no because it feels almost like you are giving up on being "elite", but I think it could be a really interesting fit.

quote:

If you subscribe to the theory that you need to do something a little bit different at Ole Miss to compete with the big boys, why not give the triple option a try? Say what you want, but Johnson’s approach flat-out works. Heck, Georgia Tech has won just as many SEC games in the last calendar year as Ole Miss. (It’s true, look it up.)

Johnson has been at Georgia Tech for 10 years, and he’s enjoying perhaps as good a relationship with his administration as he’s ever had. But he also loves a good challenge, and at age 60 time is running out if he wants to make one more career move. It’s worth a shot because he’d win. And he wouldn’t cheat.

His other interesting one was Mike Gundy to Arkansas, which would make a whole lot of sense (especially since Gundy seems to flirt with another job every year and he'd fit right in at Arkansas).

quote:

Every year, there’s just enough noise surrounding his relationship with the Oklahoma State administration and mega-booster T. Boone Pickens to make it seem like Gundy is ready to leave his alma mater. And every year, he pulls back from the brink and stays in his comfort zone. Gundy got a new contract this past summer to bring him above $4.2 million annually, so money won’t really be a factor.

Gundy is just hard enough to make it worth asking, while realizing he’s likely going to stay in Stillwater at the end of the day. But wouldn’t it be fun to see his offense in the SEC? And in terms of a cultural fit, the Mulleted One would slide right in. After all, you can rattlesnake hunt just as well in Northwest Arkansas as you can in Northeast Oklahoma.

Dan Wolken is a moron. It would only be worth it if we crippled Bama with enough cut blocks to keep them out of the Natty.

Why the hell would he leave Atlanta to go coach in Oxford? That would be a downgrade.

I wanted him after his 1st year at Tech. I like to see some passing of the football, but haven't seen much of that the past few years anyway

It would be a decent fit, but I'm not sure why he'd make that move. It's not like GT can't pay him.

Always heard that Johnson was kinda prickly. Not sure that would play well with the Vaught Society types who love to be involved in OM football.

From a tactical standpoint it would be brilliant, imo.

He is and it wouldn't. He'd lose his mind at the media circus of the SEC and the booster/fanbase stuff.

Gundy at Arkansas would scare the shite out of me. I think they could get to the level pretty quick where they're the second best team in the west in down years like this and would be good for a big time upset and 8 wins in the good years.

I always laughed at the thought of OM hiring the Pirate. A lot of folks wanted him back when CHF was hired. Paul Johnson and Mike Leach would get by like turds in a punchbowl at the grove

pj would never leave tech, he's got it made. Extremely low expecations at tech, if he wins 7 or 8 games and finishes ranked everyone is ecstatic. He's also in a recruiting hotbed, although his scheme is kryptonite for most elite players but at least he doesn't have to look far for players.

Not to mention he'd be walking into a sanction-riddled dumpster fire having to start from absolute scratch finding offensive players.

Unless they offered to triple his salary why would he possibly go there?

I agree - that's a perfect fit there and quite frankly is the guy they should zero in on with everything they have when they get rid of Bert.

He's already proven what he can do at a place similar to Arkansas, and his teams are very good EVERY SINGLE year. He'd be a great hire.

A few years ago when his relationship with Bobinski was dog shite I could see it. But they seem to all be on the same page now and everything else at Tech is perfect for his type of program (the things you mentioned).

There are a lot of parallels between Arkansas and Ok State really, though Arkansas has a much more decorated history. But both have incredible facilities and a ton of money poured into their program, they just aren't in the middle of an area that's easy to recruit to.

I can't really think of a better fit but the problem would be getting him. I think one of the reasons they let Brad Underwood walk is they knew they were gonna have to shell out some dough to re up Gundy after this year

Gundy’s son is also currently a student at Arkansas. It would be nice to get the family back together again.

Wow, really? Didn't know that.

That would be an absolute home run hire for Arkansas.

It helps to not have another major D-1 program in your state that is also a top 5 all time program.

All of this. GT under Johnson does very well with UGA's leftovers.

He doesn't even really get UGA's leftovers. He gets P5 leftovers for the most part.

Though, they aren't really necessarily leftovers. They recruit to their own thing. The QB, Marshall, is a stud........and he was the 92nd best player in Georgia per 247. They beat out Appalachian State for him.
