Mullen is a great QB Coach, of that I am certain. As a head coach meh! He doesn’t leave StarkVegas because he’d have to up his game and work too hard to break that 8-4 glass ceiling. Easier to stay put where 8-4 is a good year and the fans all love you.

Auburn has 55 4 and 5 star players. Msu has 16. That's not bad coaching, that's bad recruiting. I understand that recruiting is also his responsibility but, as far as coaching goes he's in the top 15 in the country imo. People always bring up his record against top 25 teams. Most of those losses came to top 10 teams. I think Mullen can't come up with a scheme that overcomes the talent difference on the field. 55 to 16 is a significant talent gap. I think its unrealistic to think he's a bad coach because he doesn't consistently beat top 10 recruiters when he recruits in the high 20's. IF State had 2 or 3 first rounders drafted in the NFL every year and had put 30 players in the league in the last 4 years then I would say he does a poor job coaching. Bottom line, Dan does a good job coaching the talent he has but, he is not a good recruiter. That's why State will be a 7-5 type team most years, with a shot a 10 wins every 4 or 5 years.

Miss State aren't spoiled. We know that we may have to suffer some 6-6 years before we can have a big season. No one expected more than 7 wins this year. 2018 is set up really well for us and Dan IMO is the best coach for us if we want a chance every 4 years to make a push for an appearance in ATL.

Depends on who you ask. Those that are objective and have a long term view think he has a lot of value. Those that like to go out and hire the Ed Orgeron types think he is the 100th best HC in the country. Personally I think he is a top 25 coach and we will still finish 7-5 or better which is what most predicted. Most normal people though 1-2 of this 3 game stretch would be a good thing and 9-3 would be a good season. 7-5 would be acceptable season. Anything less he needs to feel the pressure.

All things are relative. Compared to Bert, Orgeron, Luke, and Butch he doesn't look that bad.

Mullen's stock has never been high or he would be making a career of Ms. State.
Yea, he's making north of $4.5M a year at a place where he can win ~7 a year and stay as long as he wants! Poor SOB.

And, who would that be?

I agree. Most of our fans understand our program and have the patience to see the long term. A good many of our SEC brethren have a microwave expectation that means I want to win yesterday. State fans understand that in the SEC (aside from Bama currently) things tend to cycle. You are going to have average years, good years and an occasional bad year along with maybe a great year here and there. (More of a crock pot thought process).
Yes, a talent gap exists between State and Bama, LSU, UGA, Aub and Florida. I think Mullen is a good recruiter that has slowly closed the gap with those teams over 8 years. It is a easy to look at a 2 game sample and criticize him for falling short. I think you give credit to UGA and Auburn and move on.
Overall, he has done a great job at MState and has developed some continuity. Future recruiting looks good and odds for success are high over the next several years.
So no, his stock has not crashed. Disappointing losses, Yes but still behind our coach and team going forward.

Assistant Coach continuity specifically D-Coordinator would help. DJ Looney has been great on the recruiting trail. We need to find a way to get 1 more 4 star OL recruit every year and 1 more 4 star WR recruit every year. All other position groups seem to be recruiting fine. We had secondary issues but those should cure themselves pretty quickly. Grantham's schemes do require lockdown corners like Joe Lee's did as well which kinda concerns me. Things are trending positively though. I know O is a good recruiter, but this demise and Dak's fame is hurting him in LA. I'm hoping to poach croots from there and lock down MS. The future is bright. So bright I wear my sunglasses at night.

He went from top 10 coach to possibly get poached to maybe not even being top 10.

You sound mad we didn't hire Mullen. If you were a fan of a real football program, you wouldn't want Mullen, either. Some of us who are intelligent football fans didn't want Orgeron for LSU, either.
So enjoy your 30-point beatdown of what was left of LSU's football program and getting boat-raced by the few teams left in the SEC that still have a pulse.

The real question is who were the suckers who bought the stock when it was irrationally overvalued a couple of weeks ago.
Dan Mullen is something like 2-30 against teams that FINISH in the AP Top 25. When MSU pounded LSU in Week 3, that game told us way more about LSU than it did about MSU. It meant LSU in all likelihood would not finish in the Top 25.
Coaches with a record like Mullen against quality opponents don't suddenly turn it around in Year 9 at a program. MSU will continue to be MSU, and any early season wins over big teams should tell everyone more about the opponent than anything else.

What's wrong with Matt Luke? You can't build a mansion out of toothpicks. Wish he had a real shot instead of this position... it's a lose lose for him. I can't stand OM but like the guy, we went to the same high school.
