Crazy rule change hypotheticals/alternate history

If pass interference penalty was eliminated for both offense and defense or had never existed in the first place, what would football look like? Would teams still attempt to pass downfield?

If thee WR kept getting mugged with no penalty then I wouldn’t see the forward pass being used much.

I wonder if teams would attempt to screen people open like basketball

I imagine defensive holding would still be a thing. So DBs couldn't just tackle and hold the receivers to prevent them from going out for a pass.
You also would eliminate offensive pass interference, so schemes would include blockers for the receivers. That might have made things more interesting and physical. Trips left with only one going out for the pass. Defense wouldn't know which until they're getting popped in the mouth by blockers.

It would be crazy physical. Id imagine passes over the middle would be infrequent
