Cable is going the way of the dodo. EDIT: Sling TV is the first step, but it's not the end state.

Currently expansion is driven by carriage fees. Get any school in a populous state to force tier 1 rates.

However, if in 10 years most of the population doesn't have cable and streams content, does that affect desirable expansion targets? Is a massive school like UCF more valuable than UVA?

This isn't necessarily about the SEC, just in general.

I think it's a legitimate worry but as it stands live events, mainly sports, still drive a lot of content and advertising revenue. What people are getting sick of is paying $150/month for a million channels they don't watch. Well. They still watch ESPN, and ESPN content. So people will pay for that one way or another.

On a side discussion, Why does the Rant not have either a realignment mega thread or a board of its own? The way it works on tRant is micro discussions keep popping up but they are just repeats of previous threads and get stale and boring because they are repeats.

With Chicken and all the smart folks under his command there must be a smarter way to do this discussion.

I hear ya on that one. I have the U Verse 200 pkg along with internet, so it's a bundle deal. Pay $158 a month and don't watch half the shitty arse channels.

They should pay me to watch any of the shopping channels, Lifetime, and any channel that now has infomercials between 3am and 9 am

The only reason why I have stuck with AT@T is because they carry the SECN, that alone makes my arse southern.

On a related discussion, does any national hotel chain carry the SECN?

While traveling the south and staying at several different chains I am noticing this is getting to be a real problem.

Are you talking Slingbox or Sling TV?

I really want to cut the cord on my $100+ satellite bill and am considering going with Sling TV via my Roku.

Roku + OTA + Netflix or Hulu + Sling TV would bring it down to less than $30 a month. You could probably ax the $20 for Sling TV during selected months. The only gap would be the regional sports networks to watch the local MLB, NHL, NBA, etc. And I know there's a workaround to get those if you really want them.

So what ideas do other cord cutters have to get what you want at more reasonable rates?

I stayed at the Drury in O'Fallon, IL outside of St. Louis a few weeks ago. They had the SECN much to my surprise.

Apple TV for Watch ESPN , NBC Sports Live, CBS Sports

Time Warner App on IPad for Fox Sports One and Big 10 Network

Have internet through cable...split one to router and one back of TV...run channel scan and surprise, I have SEC Network (not in HD, but who cares), and many more HD channels (local for Fox, ABC, CBS, NBC)

I am able to watch may sporting events by cutting the cord...plus many show content on Hulu, Netflix, and HBO Go.

Sling TV should have been referenced. Here's why this matters. The Big 10 will have a hugely profitable, but traditional bid process.

In 10 years a conference will have the real opportunity to sell subscriptions without a middle man.

Yes and no

There will always be a middleman, the key is to understand who it is and invest in their company to collect the windfall when you reach retirement.

An over-the-air option becomes more vital. Put the best stuff on it, get a chunk of that advertising, and hope the product lures enough to subscribe for greater access.

Have 3 tiers of that: 10 games ,25 games, and total.

You need to call in to their retention department and get that renegotiated. I have U300 with the sports package added on and only pay like $122/mo. Every time my contract comes up, I just call in to the retention department and talk to them about getting set up on a new deal. It's usually pretty easy.
