Playing high school football gives a person an infinite amount of understanding more than a person who has never played.

If you haven't played organized football at the high school or college level, you have absolutely NO business making decisions like the ones she's in charge of making.

I would pit a random Southern woman's college football IQ against a random man from any other region any day of the week and if I bet on them I'd win 9 times out of 10.

Please point out the knowledge of a player vs someone who hasn't played, specifically.

the AP has been handing out national titles since the 30s ... seriously doubt every writer during that time had played football at the collegiate level, or even the hs level ...

the committee put osu in to cover for their screw up with tcu/baylor/fsu ... fsu never should've fallen to #4, and tcu never should've been ranked higher than baylor ...

Oh hush. I've played hundreds of games of foosball, and half the women I played didn't understand what I mean by 'no spinsies or backupsies.' These are not foosball rule mavens.

Every single aspect of the emotional side of the game. The intricate knowledge of the process of preparation, the toll it takes on you mentally, how you go about preparing and competing from day to day, the inner workings of a football team/family and how they interact with each other and how that affects them on a field...

I could go on and on and on, but you get the point. Someone who has never played can watch as much as they want - but they'll never "understand" the game.

Quit being retarded. There's good coaches out there who have never played the game.

What does any of that shite have to do with picking the best teams?

Nothing.

I'm not aware of any "good coaches" who never played the game at all. Perhaps there are some. But they got their start by getting a job as an assistant to someone or some team - doing a miniscule job and working their way up by working under people who could teach them. They didn't just watch a bunch of football and then decide they were ready to coach.

I have heard of decent coaches who never played in college.

All of this is exactly why it is a good reason to have her on the committee. Sometimes you need an outsider to point of obvious flaws that aren't apparent to people too close to the situation.

This is why businesses often bring in outside consultants or hire from within other market sectors.

If the entire committee were made up of people that had no football experience, you may have a valid point, but 1 out of 12 is good way to offer a different perspective and insight into the committee.

Would you say Freeze is just a "decent" and not a good coach?

You can study and watch all the film you want - until you've played the game you don't have a true understanding of it and have absolutely no authority to determine the outcome of games or championships.

BS.....Being around Jim Carlen, Joe Morrison, Danny Ford and Vince Dooley and too many small college coaches to count, plus tons of ex-stars, gave me a true understanding.

I will give you this: College football is a dynamic game and what a player or journalist might have learned a few years ago might not be worth a hill of beans now.

Take Saban, for instance. He prefers "muscle ball," but knows that is not enough against a team with a really good front four. Also, he and Kirby, defend the end sweep, so popular out of the spread, that it is almost unreal. I don't think there is another team in Bama's class where this is concerned.

Still, as you obviously, know, our eyes have to keep moving and not be glued to the ball. But I understand the game and have never played it.

I wonder how many people played football just for the 'in' it gives them? I mean, Saban's not built for football, so I've actually theorized that Saban always wanted to be a coach and put his 4'11" arse on the field sheerly so he could get a coach's attention and mentoring.

And you don't know a damn thing about how your body and mind feel when you're on sprint number 26 with your coach screaming at you to puke on your own time and not his - and calling you a frick stick, and what it takes to push through that and finish.

So, there's that.
