Negative there, ghostrider..
Born in Gulfport to a father who attended MSU(all of his other relatives either live in louisiana or went to LSU, though..he was kicked out of LSU for partying too much)..mother attended Jacksonville State.
Nice attempt though.

IDK WTF you are talking about. They've won 2 titles since 2006, had 3 13 win season in the last 4 years, won a BCS bowl last year, had a heisman trophy winner in 2007...
yeah, they're at the top of the football world. They didn't win a title in 2009, but come on, since 2006 being a UF fan has been pretty fricking sweet.

There's only room for one team at the top of the world, and right now it's Alabama, sorry dude.
Will that change? Certainly, but right now it's Alabama, without a doubt

I had the chance to attend State but chose USA instead needless to say, out of state tuition's a bitch and my dad is just happy i haven't attended LSU(yet)..He is a big state fan

quote:That is not what you asked. My dad graduated from State in 1941 (the year we were robbed of a national championship by Alabama) so naturally, I followed State early on. I was born the year before Jack started doing the football games. We had an occasional good year - first I remember was 63, suffered through some horrible years under Shira. Got better under Tyler only to forfeit some games because he is hard headed. Really fun times under Bellard with John Bond at QB and then some more under Sherrill once the Felker experiment ended. I suppose I keep hanging around because that is what real fans do but to be most accurate, I am a bigger baseball fan than I am football.
Surely you have some good things over the years that have kept you a fan and that is what makes this conference so great in my mind and that is the way the fans have stuck with their schools the way we have. That is also what makes our fan bases so knowageable about the teams in this conference. If you find time would love to read about the things that have served to make you a fan for so many years. Remember we are the SEC and we are the best so share what helps us to be the best from State's point of view.

My first REAL memory of UT was the beat down UT put on Miami in 1986.

From year to year, the team on top changes, yeah, so technically Alabama is on top right now.
But over the past few years? Jesus. UF has had it goooooood. Better than anyone.

Very difficult to compare the two eras of football. I started following Bama in the 1940's. Frank Thomas was the coach, Harry Gilmer was the "star." Gilmer was a "triple-threat" back, he ran, he passed and he was the punter. (The quick kick was a weapon used once in a while). Gilmer was not a quarterback, but in the Notre Dame "box" formation used then, the left-halfback was usually the focus of attention. The quarter-back was a blocker on most plays. The players were not nearly as big, even as late as the 1961 NC team, the starting offensive guards were in the 190 pound range. Charley Pell was one of those.
The biggest noticeable difference is in recruiting. You found out who the new recruits were when practice started just prior to the season. Freshmen could not play, but played on the Junior Varsity, and played other JV teams from the other teams around. Yes, the "subs" from the senior varsity sometimes were given "extra practice" playing on the JV team. Players played both ways, Gilmer was a very fine defensive back as well. Vaughn Mancha was probably the biggest guy on the team at about 230 lbs, and was the center. My favorite team from those days was the 1944 team. WW II was going on, there had been no football in 1943. Most college teams were kids who were 4F (physically unable to enter the military) or very young. After the '44 season, Bama played Duke in the Sugar Bowl. Duke was a "V-12" school, training officers for the military, and had many former college players from all over playing for them. Bama lost, 29-26 in one of the more exciting games I have "heard." (Radio) Then following the 1945 season, Alabama became the last team outside the West Coast and Big Ten to play in the Rose Bowl, defeating USC, I believe the score was 34-14. Of course, since the BCS, the annual Rose Bowl is no longer automatically the West Coast vs. the Big 10.
Denny Stadium (before Coach Bryant) held about 35,000 or so, don't rember exactly. I lived in Bessemer, about 40 miles from campus. Got to see my first game in person in 1945.

I can't remember when I first started following my team, but my first memories are going to State/LSU games in the early nineties, home and away, when every game seemed like a close one and it seemed like we were the best team in the world. I don't know exactly how we did in the late eighties but it was definitely better than the 2000's. We had better coaches than Croom(the least qualified coach in the history of the SEC) and we were competitive most of the time. I have no idea what recruiting was like back then, but I'm sure this year will be more similar as compared to last decade. The 2000's set our program back a long way. And I personally know the main person who was mainly responsible for that hiring. I would punch him in the face every week at the post office when i see him if I could, but I can't. So, basically we are worse off than the days I remember starting to follow MSU, but I see a very similar era in the near future. Not a championship team, but a competitive one.

2. Players: Talent wise and condition.
HUGE Upgrade though thin at QB

3. Recruiting program. Staying vs leaving early.
Couldn't be better as of now

4. Type of Offense vs then.
tough one

5. Type of Defense vs then.
THis defense

6. Facilities. Stadium, Practice facilities and Training facilities.
All were upgraded and with the Top weight room in the nation(frick TEXAS they are old and unattractive) it couldn't be better other than the stadium expanded, and the outside renovated.

I started watching the Hogs in the late 60s, so I don't think we can make a really valid comparison between then and now. I'll try though.
1)Frank Broyles in his prime was as good as there was. Petrino might get there, but I don't think what Frank did will be replicated.
2)Talent- I'm betting this is a push
3)recruiting-better then
4)offense much better now
5)defense likely better then
6)now..of course.
7)fan for 41 years I can remember, though I grew up going to War Memorial back in the 60s. I love theSEC now because I followed the Hogs their. I don't miss the Texas conference at all

Been a fan since 89 under Bill Curry. I always cheered for the SEC in the early days and have see sawed between tolerating and hating: UT and AU. LSU and Ole Miss are my fav teams that I do not really cheer for other than Bama in the SEC.

i went to my first alabama game in 1992 (vs. ole miss). i was 5. we won the national championship that year.

Just out of curiosity, why Auburn? You said you picked based on a better education, and distance clearly wasn't a factor.
