TennesseeBeat: #Vols' Butch Jones said many coaches are "calling me saying how did you do it? How did you manage? You’ve had so many adversities happen."

This is the offseason narrative that will allow Tennessee to successfully defend their offseason NC from the pre-offseason favorites AU and LSIxU.

Everyone but Bama would have looked bad. The thing is, he needs to shut the frick up.

This. He's turned down media help that has been offered despite never really being comfortable with the media but I'm not sure I'd accept an offer from Hart either. That said, he needs to shut the frick up and learn to stonewall the way Saban does instead of trying to answer shite designed to make you look stupid no matter how you answer. The Life Champions thing was a perfect example of that -- that's something tons of college and pro teams talk about (hell one major program had it in their hiring profile) but CBJ being naive or otherwise oblivious to what our media is all about gives an answer countless others have given to similar questions and it blows up. It's not his words so much as his timing which is terrible. THAT is a result of the AD and Coach BOTH being tone deaf to the media and fanbase here.

CBJ just needs to shut the frick up until someone like Blackburn is hired who has a better feel for the media and fanbase. And Dave Hart should be pistol whipped for allowing CBJ to turn down media help in the first place.

He's a lot better than he looks on paper. In fact, UT kind of sent him away to UTC because he needed to get some higher level experience and experience away from UTK if he was ever to become our AD (there are a lot of people who feel this has been the path for him from day one) but from people that have dealt with him before he's whip smart and knows how to manage his coaches. We've went an entire year with no real AD. Dave Hart was brought in to be a hatchet man not a permanent hire and while he's been good at being brutal budget wise, he's sucked at about everything else. He doesn't understand UT and his tone deafness has hurt him and the entire AD.

Truthfully, we haven't had an AD that understood UT since Doug Dickey retired and we've gone downhill ever since. Blackburn understands UT but more importantly he understands that you have to protect your programs and even your coaches and often when it comes to coaches you have to protect them from themselves. Hart has been a lame duck all year and even prior to his contract non-renewal/retirement he was an AD who was heavy handed with smaller programs while not actually helping his coaches. He didn't know how to protect a coach from him or herself.

Blackburn, OTOH, knows sports management AND people. He will guide his coaches and be forceful when he needs to be without being the ironfist that Hart could be when it came to money. From the day Hart announced his retirement, he's been the only candidate UT people have wanted. He's the type of AD who can help CBJ much the same way Dickey helped Fulmer. Hell I date tDecline as starting with Dickey's retirement. A lot of folks don't realize the power a good AD wields. They can make or break a coach and I don't just mean by controlling their purse strings and hiring.

UT desperately needs to get this hire right. It's even more important than the football coach right now. (Oh and he'll also kick Holly's arse into gear or make damn sure we get the best coach not named Geno to lead our LVs).

Okay, gotcha. A good administrator is sometimes better than a good coach. Bama springs to mind when talking about how an AD can change the fortunes of the entire program. Good luck to y'all. I'm still going to troll because that's what God told me, Dan Akroyd, and John Belushi to do, of course.

So the financial crisis is over, or looking to be over soon?

Then he was a necessary evil. Fans hate it, and understandably so, but schools and departments have to think like corporations, not fans.

Pretty much. The biggest problem with Hart was that he was too heavy handed with a few programs he should've let be. But overall he did what he was hired to do -- he was always going to be the one to do some tough budgetary stuff that would piss people off but after that job was done it takes a certain amount of charisma and leadership that few have to stay. Hart just never had that but he did do a good job trimming the fat.

Not sure anyone knows. Serrano has finally figured out that his style of baseball doesn't work in the SEC and has adapted. It may be too little too late but at the same time it may not be. I don't think this board truly understands how apathetic UT fans are to UT baseball. We say it but part of me thinks that y'all think we're putting you on. But UT let our minor league team displace UT baseball a long time ago. Most of us care more about softball than college baseball because we have a better minor league experience w/alcohol if baseball is something that interests us. Whereas softball is different enough to where it competes for attention a little better than pitting the college team experience against attending a minor league game in a really great environment.

But again those are mistakes the AD made a long time ago by never promoting baseball. But without a rabid fanbase, Serrano's job is prob. a lot safer than it would be at other SEC schools.

By adversities, did they mean shitty coaching decisions?

Probably meant the bazillion injuries we had. We had a total of 1 starter on defense who started every game and didn't miss significant PT. Jones is bad with the press and has made his fair share of bad decisions but he's not wrong about this team experiencing a lot of shitty luck.

Gender confusion is a huge distraction for Lyle "transformer" Jones.

snicker. Your AD isn't going to win football games for you, and Jones evidently isn't going to win enough to matter much in the SEC.
