It's like we can't talk about the mysterious circumstance behind someone winning a football national championship then getting fired.

If I had to rank the people most responsible for that 2010 season, I would rank them like so:

1. Cam Newton
2. Gus Malzahn
3. Senior leadership
4. Michael Dyer

5. Gene Chizik

I'd put Josh Bynes/Nick Fairley in that ranking somewhere. That defense seemed to create a turnover at a key moment in every big game that season.

Gene got himself fired. He resented that Gus got all the credit for the 2010 BCS Championship and put a leash on him and it backfired. Gene is an idiot.

This guy gets it. Ego.

If Cam Newton would have went to MSU, they would NOT have won the national title. AU wouldn't have won a national title without Cam, but Cam wouldn't have won one without AU.

Probably not, but you can't say that definitively. We went 9-4 that year with Relf at QB. With Cam we definitely beat Auburn and Arkansas. Who knows what happens with Bama and LSU? We probably split giving us an outside chance if we beat USCe in the SEC Title game. Cam is one of the best college players ever who could change the outcome of any game.

2011 Auburn wasn't very bright after Cam's departure either..

All good points, but Mullins would have still fricked it up somehow.

Who gets the credit for those 7-5 seasons and 4th place finishes in '09 and '11?

Gene or Gus?

maybe that had to do with the loss of defensive talent and the offensive line a bit as well

09 was Gus, before he was put on a leash...hell of a turnaround on Gus' behalf

11 was Gus leashed

both seasons were better than Bert's first year, Petrino's first year and on par with his second (minus that whole "we went to better than the shitty Liberty Bowl" thing)
