Meh. It brings it all down. Development is important. Even the private schools in Mississippi are trashy because the relative wealth is so low. It's the worst state in the Union.

Central MS is home to Rankin and Madison counties. The highest income in the state and the counties average household income places it about 25th nationally as highest income per capita. Central MS also has the best schools and the best shopping. I don't know what the frick you are talking about

Lol. Show me income stats.

It's just too easy to knock a place with the highest poverty rate in the nation, the worst education, lowest literacy rate, highest obesity rate, and the state that didn't technically outlaw slavery until the late 1990s.

According to whom?

I was pleasantly surprised how nice MS was on our trip to Stark-Vegas. People were friendly and like the OP stated, very similar to East TX.

I'll agree. I loved Oxford. But the lack of street lights, cities along the highways, and general activity anywhere outside campus revealed to me the lack if relative wealth. There is nothing in that state. It's honestly sad for his pretty it is.

Starkville has changed exponentially in the last 15 years. Most opinions you will get are from people who visited 20+ years ago and hated it so much and vowed never to go back. It's a beautiful place now and has some of the best tailgating and people in the nation. Especially for baseball, if you've never been to Dudy-Noble, it's a must see IMHO.

Idk what that dude is talking about but I can promise he is wrong. As relatively nice as Madison is there still isn't shite there and no place in ms will ever be top 25 in any positive income statistic.

I spent a few days in Grenada fishing in the Crappie Masters tournament several years ago.

Thought it was a decent enough place and the East Texas culture comparison is something I can agree with.

Grenada blows.

Girlfriend has family in Grenada, we went up there this weekend for Christmas. Doesn't seem like much to do. Although her family was pretty cool.

location hurts them. For instance, my father in law is trying to develop some property in mccomb on his land. He's got a movie theatre coming. Needs 4 restaurants. Developing some strips. They wanted target badly but they said no bc they just built in Hammond, la. And Jackson isn't far. We all know about Jackson. It's limiting the surrounding areas but in the same breath, nobody wants to be there.

So while there are million dollar homes in mccomb and small towns like it, there isn't enough of those people wholive there to justify building better stuff. And there's so much trash surrounding it that it brings value down so much.

Like you said, private schools aren't funded like they should be. Just a handful of families. Parklane for instance has buildings with tin roofs. It looks like an elementary school but the other options are making your kid a minority. They need plants instead of shipyards. They need more jobs for medium income families. It's either rich or poor in a lot of areas. Business owners, doctors, lawyers, make up all the wealth. There's not a lot of work for engineers. Not a lot of process tech jobs. Louisiana thrives on the oil field. That's the only leg up Louisiana has on Mississippi.

They are reinvigorating the coal game with their Eco friendly plants they're building. That will problvide jobs but places like meridian, where the murder rates are high, people are going to just continue to live in Alabama and make the short drive to work like they're doing now. Same with Columbus. Mississippi needs to do a better job utilizing their ports.

There's so much that can be done to improve Mississippi but they elect governors who are more worried about rewriting history books to give blacks credit for discovering America.

the people in Mississippi look out for themselves when voting, not the community. Rich and poor.

I am a upper Midwest, cornbelt yankee transplant who has lived down south for 20 years now. I have lived, traveled, and worked extensively in both Mississippi and Louisiana, both states are awesome and unique. IMO. The Mississippi Delta may be poor and backwards but its beautiful and full of history and culture. In fact, i've heard it referred to as "the most southern place on earth". The Mississippi coast is under-appreciated. I absolutely love South Louisiana as well. New Orleans may smell bad, but it is one of the great cities of the world. Natchez and Lafayette are beautiful, Vicksburg has an awesome story and the history is compelling. Natives of both states should be proud of their home. It could be worse.......

The lake was nice, but it was down more than 10 feet and we didn't have a very good day fishing.

Every state could be a great place to live depending on the area and if you like it. Every state has beautiful women. Travel more and you will realize this. (Not directed towards anyone)

I will defend Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and any deep south state over the north.

Some of y'all are some negative, glass-half-empty a-holes. Why only look at or dwell on the negative when Mississippi and all southern states have many positive points that you could emphasize?
Every state has problems or negative points.

I'd much rather live in the south....

As a libertarian, I feel obligated to point out that the typically last ranked state in the US to live in is still a pretty great place to live.
