this is fricking weak... granted i live in birthplace of skynyrd and my dad is probably 2 miles from brickyard road, but wtf. if the original members weren't dug and reburried after vandalism a few years, i would go to the op mall and witness them rolling over in person.

Its racist because it mentions a southern state and is by default deemed racist

That said, why was this dumbass playing it during a protest? I hate our fanbase sometimes.
This.
Even tho the song is actually anti Governor Wallace, people believe it is pro Wallace. In fact, I believe most people who like the song believe it is pro-segregationist and that's WHY they like it. I have no doubt that this cop is a similar kind of stupid, and that's WHY he played it.
As a private citizen, he should be able to wear a KKK outfit and antagonize protestors if he so chooses. But he's a fricking cop, and as a cop you can't do that shite. His arse should be fired, post haste.

"Sweet Home Alabama" is racially offensive?
Yes.
It's a song sung by rednecks defending a Southern state from the attack of a condescending Canadian.
Much better to blast Randy Newman's song "Rednecks" from your car.
Tone deaf, humorless people LOVE that song.
Especially the bit about college boys from LSU.

It could have been about Neil Young's song about about Alabama though.
Neil Youngs song was "Southern Man" and Skynyrd took the piss out of Young with the line "Neil Young will remember...a southern man dont need him round anyhow".
And I liked NY when he was with CSNY. After that, not so much. His voice is very whiney.

No, I think most people who like the song like it because it's a good song.

I see nothing wrong with a peace officer being disciplined for doing something that can provoke people, dumb reason or not. Cops shouldn't be blasting music, regardless of the situation. Do that shite in your own time, in your own vehiicle.
To the poster that said he should be fired, you're as dumb as he is.

Isn't Sweet Home Alabama anti-racism?

There was no good reason to play it in Chicago.
Blues Brothers soundtrack would be better choice.

“Some of the lyrics in themselves aren’t racist … but I know it’s also been co-opted by groups, maybe bigoted groups, as an anthem of Southern pride and those Confederate-type values,” said Michael, 30. “That’s what was so jarring to me. To hear that playing from a police car at the end of a protest against police brutality and the murder of African-Americans, it was just jarring.”
Some people heard something and called it offensive, and we just can't have that around here.

Seriously, there are people being very obtuse up in this thread. And some have mentioned, this is all about context. The song is not overly offensive in itself. But when played in that manner at that location at that time, then what the hell are people supposed to think? Jesus, the guy is a dumbass if he didn't think African Americans would hear a song glorifying a "southern man" and state that had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century, and not think the worst. Granted he is a Bama fan, so he may just be THAT tone deaf.

actually I believe in the song they boo the governor?
yeap, the governor line is meant to be sarcastic. Of course everything has to mean exactly what it says these days. Unless you follow it with an eye rolling emoticon.
