Update: Late tonight I spoke with someone who had spoken with an SEC official about this call. Per the SEC, the officials on the field used their discretion in ruling the part of the play in question a “backwards pass” and not a fumble, hence the “on 4th down…” part of the rule doesn’t come into play in their opinion.

That play should get much more national appeal.
In the year of crazy plays, this one is one of the most crazy when you study it. That WR just slung the ball up in the air , bounce right up to Arkansas` best back and he still tries a lateral himself at the end.

It even says clearly in his own pasting that backwards passes, laterals are legal. The language very specifically differentiates between backwards passes/laterals and fumbles.
