Probably. I know there are the mulatto/lost tribe/etc. theories with them. I went to school with a couple of Lumbee kids who were cousins of Kelvin Sampson, they had some wiry hair.

Chavis does look a bit like the actor (Benicio Del Toro).

Most of Hunter Thompson's stories are based on truth to some degree. Hunter just knew how to take them to another level. The man who was Thompson's 'Samoan attorney' (Dr. Gonzo) in that book was Oscar Zeta Acosta, a close friend of Thompson's in real life.
