Mike Nolan's name came up a lot, too. At the time he was one of the flavor of the moment "young, hungry up and coming NFL assistants."

Bill Snyder at Kansas State came up either after Curley was fired or DiNardo--may have been Curley. He wanted LSU to sign off on some unbelievable 57 point list of changes.LSU was indeed sucking wind at the time, but, still...Thankfully LSU told him to pound sand.

I'm just glad Mark Emmert stepped in. Yes, Saban's hiring happened while Joe Dean was still AD but all Dean did was make coffee or picked Emmert up at the airport. I'm sure Dean was zeroing in on Wake Forest's line coach who would come for $135,000 a year.

Erickson came up in 1994 and 1999. Not sure how interested he was but his name did come up.

Les Miles had just beat Okla, Neb and Texas in the same year. What I heard was who is Nick Saban? Who had he beat at MS? Nobody.......NS was a big unknown. Glad he came to LSU though..........

I think Butch Davis was the main candidate. I believe he was interviewed, but Emmert passed him up because of his NFL interest.

Dennis Erickson was also a candidate and so was the TCU head coach.

Guess I just didnt follow Big XII that much or whatever but I clearly remember not knowing who Miles was. I knew who Saban was prior.

Les Miles was the TE coach for the Dallas Cowboys from 1998-2000. He didn't become OKSt's HC until 2001, a year after Saban was hired at LSU.
