I understand this line of thinking but it's not cheering for each individual team. It is cheering for the conference they play in. When Bama beats Florida State the SEC chant will not be for LSU or Auburn it will be for the league they play in.

Big 6 practically invented it. Heard at the end of the 92, 96, and 98 championship games.
As the littlest member of the Big 6, you probably haven't realized we save it for important games.
The chant was born out of 100 years of Northern elitism spilling over into college football. Yankee writers only cared about the Ivys, then the land grant Midwestern schools, then the glitzy California schools. They decided who's rivalries mattered, who's bowl games mattered, hell they decided who won the championship and regularly snubbed southern teams for ND and their ilk.
The SEC was marginalized for much of the 20th century, so ever since we've taken our rightful place on the throne, it's been good to remind the same Northwestern and Syracuse pricks who wouldn't give UT a Heisman 50 years ago but are now sucking Bama's schlong 24/7 that we still remember, and that our conference will always rise to the top when given an opportunity to prove it on the field.

my man! The bottom line is, frick the yanks. Nobody gives a shite for us southern schools, only schools like OSU,ND, USC, and Nebraska. We pushed their shite in the past decade and they're pissy about it. I'll be damned if we lose that pride and let the yanks screw us over again, that pride is the only thing holding them back from screwing us over. With that being said

I agree that it gets over used. Should only be reserved for the bowl season and maybe a few of the big OOC games (and then even in understated moderation).
It is better overall for the conference for all of us to win against OOC teams. Otherwise, we would be relegated to CUSA status. To be a dominant conference you have to beat other teams from around the country.
Now having said that, conference games we go back to be rivals, smack talk etc.

I laugh when I watch the SEC commercial themed "it just means more" with the "SEC SEC SEC" chant. No one does that anymore.
Personally, I hope Greg Sanky gets dick cancer every day.
We are not the SEC, we are the Alabama's and the 13 Dwarfs.
