Can Tennessee football repeat its 2003 feat with wins in Florida and Alabama?

Knox news article

When I engage in discussions as to the most memorable, captivating University of Tennessee football seasons, the 2003 campaign doesn’t come up often, if at all.

Maybe because we recall a 41-14 thumping by Georgia in Neyland Stadium that ultimately prevented the Vols from making it to Atlanta for the SEC championship game. Maybe because the season did end in a trip to Atlanta – a second consecutive uninspired Peach Bowl loss, this one to Clemson.

But that 2003 team did accomplish something – two things, actually – that no Vol squad has managed to achieve over the past two decades.

And that something is being tossed out as a possibility in 2023.

The ’03 Vols won at Florida and at Alabama.

2023 Tennessee Vols Schedule

9/2 vs Virginia (Nashville)

9/9 vs Austin Peay

9/16 @ Florida

9/23 vs UTSA

9/30 vs South Carolina

10/14 @ Texas A&M

10/21 @ Alabama

10/28 @ Kentucky

11/4 vs UConn

11/11 @ Missouri

11/18 vs Georgia

11/25 vs Vanderbilt

Pretty much everyone won at Alabama in 2003

I had no idea that was the last time they won in either place. Vols will most likely be favored in Gainesville this year, but strange things can happen in this game.

2003 is one of ht eworst albaam teams I've seen in my lifetime, maybe THE worst actually.

2003 UF just shows the mental hex that helmet and jersey had on richt and our entire program at the time. We slaughtered UT 41-14 in knoxville (a team that would win at UF) yet we lost to UF.

Man I'm glad those days are gone.

So, every 20 years must be this guy's theory. How many buffoons do we have writing this stuff?

I am sorry for not including Georgia in an offseason thread. Totally my bad. What was I thinking?

I think he was just pointing out the context. That Tennessee won vs both last year and had not done so on the road in 2 decades. Also pointed out that they had not won against either on the road, much less both.

They should be heavy favorites against UF. I expect Bama to approach this game on defense more like UGA did last year.

They won't be heavy favorites in the Swamp, but they will probably be a slight favorite.

Does Tennessee plan on Alabama having one of their worst teams in half a century? Because it took you 5 OTs beat a terrible team in 2003.

I’m glad AR is gone. I’ve seen many a good ( and bad) UT teams forget how to play in the Swamp. I think Heupel will get us a win, he’s the first coach other than Kiffin since Johnny Majors that doesn’t coach scared.

Didn't they have to convert a 4th and 19 to even take it to OT?

Clausen was definitely a Tennessee legend. We have good uck with QBs out of Cali it seems. Braysus came from there as well just needed a good coach...not Dools.

No

Bama will beat Tennessee by 3 or more touchdowns at BDS

Tennessee will blow the doors off Florida. Napier is in over his head.

Did you know that Tennessee returns more seniors on defense than any team in the SEC? I don't think anyone this year is beating us by multiple scores.

I'll bet you anything you want. Bana abd UGA are both losing generational talents at the QB position and we get SC as well as UGA at home this time.

Bama looks like they are going to have a wildcat package QB leading them. Cute.

Tennessee will be a serious threat...they could actually be a bit better than last year.

Florida is Florida and the slithering swamptiles must never be underestimated. Same goes for Auburn.
