ND and Texas are two schools I don't want anywhere near the SEC! We already have to deal with Bama fans, adding those two would be too got damn much!

The reason ND would prefer the Big Twelve to the Big Ten is because the Big Ten limits ND's geographical footprint. It's already in the Midwest. The Big Twelve does not provide that limitation. The point about Michigan's bigotry in the past is also true, but I really don't think that matters anymore, to be honest. That was a big deal more than 60 years ago. It's just about ND's footprint now. I think ND would prefer the ACC over the Big Twelve, as it is better academically and has more similar institutions (small/private). It also would give ND more reach across the entire eastern seaboard from Boston to Miami. But obviously that's if it remains as is. If FSU and Clemson leave like expected for the Big Twelve, the ACC is out. SEC isn't in ND's best interest for a few reasons, including culture and academics.
Independence is still the clear top option, and really the only way I see that changing is if remaining an independent significantly hurts and/or eliminates ND's chances at a national championship compared to joining a conference (i.e. a system where only conference champions are allowed in a playoff).

Yeah, I don't even know why this is a topic on this board. Notre Dame doesn't want the SEC, and the SEC doesn't want Notre Dame.

Then we're all in agreement. Good. I think y'all should go to a conference but I don't think that conference should be the SEC. Doesn't make any sense from many levels.
Frankly, the Big 12 doesn't either. Not sure why ND seems hellbent on distancing itself from the Big 10. Guess it has something to do with y'all wanting to stay separate from everyone in any way possible.
I'm just glad your leverage is almost nothing at this stage of the game. 20 years ago y'all could have dictated all of this.

ND still has a lot of leverage at the moment, just look at the number of conferences that want it. The Big Ten, the ACC, and the Big Twelve all do. As I said earlier, the only way that changes is if there is a playoff in place where you HAVE to be a conference winner to participate, and that does not appear to be the case.

It is like people completely forgot that Chip Brown was 100% wrong on every realignment news he "reported" last year.
I fully expect the next news he hears from a "source" is that Florida is leaving the SEC and Ohio State is leaving the Big Ten to join the Big 12.

a 9 game conference schedule outside of the B1G, does not work for Notre Dame. They have already scheduled OU/tu, and they don't have to play the rest of the scrubs in the league.

Buckeye, I agree with you. The SEC should only look at our historical brothers. We need to add a school from Virginia and one from North Carolina to get the family back together!!

I wouldn't argue the cultural aspect - the Big 12 is definitely a "me first screw everyone else" entity, but in terms of academics the SEC is a significantly superior to the Big 12.

I guess. I mean. At the top three we are clearly better.

The real difference is the middle. The other Big 12 schools are TCU/OU/KU. Which Georgia, Bama, Auburn, and Mizzou are all clearly better than.
I assume UT/Kentucky/South Carolina are all shitty, but I'm not completely sure.
Either way it make no difference. We won't play Georgia/Vandy/Florida except every once in a blue moon, and we will play Ole Miss/State/LSU/Arky(which are academic jokes) every single year. Does this affect anything? No. Playing Tech/OSU/OU every year never made my school any less academically superior, in fact it probably helped it stand out to other schools among the other Big 12 schools when my football team wasn't performing well.

Plus, Notre Dame will make demands similar to Texas so the Big 12 might actually be a better fit because it might allow Notre Dame and NBC to keep their arrangement since Texas has the Longhorn network

With that said, I wonder what Oklahoma would do if Notre Dame would get concessions, that could start up talks with OU and OSU to Pac 12 or SEC

At the moment ND doesn't split any revenue.
There are two critical questions moving forward for ND.
Does NBC continue to profess its undying love for ND permanently?
How does an independent ND access the BCS system with 4 game playoff system when its outside the system?
If you believe that NBC might actually have plans increase its market share in CFB, not exclusively ND or that ND might not have the stroke anymore to dictate its access to the Playoff, then you need a Conference home that will allow you maximize your revenue.
