Petrino had it going on man. He just needed a DC and a different emphasis on recruiting. I was really looking forward to the FYMF bowl.

World's best OC trying to play head coach. There's a reason he's never sustained success.

Most recently had to be 2012 for the east. Uga almost went to the national championship. Florida was in the sugar with their only loss being a fluke play to Uga. And USCe winning 11 games and destroying the eventual east winner.

West was 2011

I'd argue 2010. While I don't believe that any of the 2010 teams would beat 2011 Alabama and LSU; the 2010 SEC West was much deeper and far more competitive.

East

May have been 1998:
UT - #1
UF - #5
UGA - #14

2001 was a good year for the East, too:
UF - #3
UT - #4
USC - #13
UGA - #22

West would either be 2010:
AU - #1
LSU - #8
UA - #10
Ark - #12
MSU - #15

or 2011:
UA - #1
LSU -#2
Ark - #5

2010 is the correct answer for the West... Auburn Bama, LSU, Arkansas were all very good...

2011 for the West, no?

Most definitely. Three of the division's six teams finished in the Top 5. Five of the six had winning records.

As of right now, either 2010 or 2011, but with the way Auburn, Alabama, A&M, and LSU are recruiting it's not unreasonable to think that the next few years could be better.

aTm is recruiting at a high level, too. And OM & MSU are "tough outs". The West is shaping up to be a meat grinder for years.

There's not a doubt in my mind that '10 Arkansas would have beaten '11 Arkansas despite finishing their year ranked lower.

It'd would've been something had UT actually had a decent coach, because that team had some good talent too. Vandy had a good year as well.

For the East, it's either 97 or 12.

98 might have a shot.

UT- undefeated national champss
UF- 10-2, finished 5th
UGA- 9-3, finished 14th
Even kentucky did very well by their standards.

2001 also saw UT and UF both do extremely well.

i actually agree with this. mallett's ability alone would be the difference.
