Not the same. General isn't a nickname. Neyland coached Tennessee in three terms due to military service, 1926-34, 1936-40, 1946-52. Knute Rockne who was widely regarded by the press and public as the best coach informed the press that General Robert Neyland was "football's greatest coach." And Bear Bryant muttered at Neyland's retirement banquet, "Thank God the old guy finally quit."

Knute Rockne also died in 1930 - two years before Bryant even came to Alabama as a player.
