I highly freaking doubt that a team wouldn't have room for a combine player. that is rediculous to think otherwise.
ya they would rather take a chance on a freshman of being a better player than the guy who had been there 3 years and knows the playbook. do even listen to yourself?

The problem is that NSD is before the draft. Yes, teams would like to take back players who weren't drafted. The problem is that what happens when the roster is full after NSD and a player wants to come back? Do you just tell one of the freshmen to frick off? Where would he go?
That all sets a bad precedent imo, and it's not like coaches have a crystal ball on who's getting drafted. So they're not going to take a chance on one of their underclassmen not getting drafted as opposed to signing a freshman and being assured that roster spot is going to be filled.

Does the word "agents" ring a bell? Most agents of decent players put up front money, knowing they will collect come contract time. A player is not drafted, his agent wants his money.....??

underclassmen should be allowed to return to school if they enter the draft and go undrafted.

I agree it would be for the NFL, but I'm a college football fan and don't care about the NFL. The NCAA's rules should not be for what benefits the NFL, they really don't matter when it comes to college football

Does the NCAA plan to increase the scholarship limit? Because the fricking draft is 2 months AFTER national signing day.
A school can only sign 25 players per year. Do you think a head coach will save spots in his 25 player limit just in case one of his former players doesn't get drafted and wants to come back to school?
And if a coach doesn't hold spots open for some undrafted players that want to come back, what does he do with the new recruits he signed in February? Kick them to the curb to make room?
An LOI signed on national signing day is a binding contract between the school and the recruit. The school can't back out of an LOI two months later just because an upperclassman choose to test the draft waters and when he didn't get drafted he wants his old roster spot back.

The NFL could easily go with modified MLB draft rules.
Just instead of allowing them out of high school, start with the three years in college. NFL teams will do their homework and figure out who wants to go pro and who doesn't.. and assign grades accordingly.
Realistically they should back a couple of the smaller football leagues and turn them into developmental/farm leagues and extend the draft out to say 12 rounds. There are already a ton of undrafted free agents.. so there's demand past the 7th round.
I agree with this argument. MLB has several development leagues and the NFL would need them too. I would say that if they go this route, allow the kids to go after high school and get in to the farm leagues, even if they are required to do so for a year. This hurts college football as top end talent but the overall product would be as good.
As far as undrafted players returning to school, I have no issues if they don't sign with an agent and/or take any money but that requires more oversight. Once you sign with an agent you can't play college ball anymore, period.

It would be nearly impossible to regulate that system. Every player worth a shite would declare and have almost unrestrained access to agents and money, even if their intent is to come back to school.
