How can one be the best in the nation, if they are not the best in thier own conference?

Name a playoff that requires you win your division/conference in order to into it.

MLB? Nope. Wildcard team Cardinals is the current champ.
NFL? Nope. The Giants did win their division this year, but last year's champion Packers were a wildcard.
NHL? Nope. More than half the teams make it in.
NBA? Nope. Same as NHL.
College Basketball? Nope.
College Baseball? Nope.
College Softball? Nope.
Etc. etc.

You could say the same about Alabama a few years back, but not any more. I don't think they should be excluded because they're independent. They have a tough schedule every year. A lot tougher than if they were in the ACC or Big East. Here's a few teams they play this year:

@ USC
@ Oklahoma
Michigan
Michigan State
Stanford
Miami (although they're no longer worth a frick)

True, but there's a huge difference here: Alabama is apart of the SEC, the SEC West to be exact, and it's one of (if not the most) toughest conferences in the nation.

ND can create their own schedule and make it as easy as they want
At some point ND needs to join a conference

As long as ND is being catered to and included in discussions with the other conferences, why would they want to change a damn thing?

Screw them - leave 'em out in the cold and their asses would man up and join a freakin conference. Hell exclude them from the discussions altogher until they join a conference and I bet they'd change their tune about being independant.

LOL but the knuckle heads who only want Conf Champs won't like it if this scenario (which is very possible) SEC W- Bama LSU and ARK all go 11-1; creating a 3 way tie in the west; well the highest ranked by the BCS gets "voted" to the SEC Champ Game. UGA goes 12-0 next year; loses to Bama who was voted in by the BCS Rankings to the SEC Champ Game. End of the season Ranks

1- Bama 12-1
2- LSU 11-1
3- ARK 11-1
4- UGA 12-1
5- USC 11-2 Pac Champ
6- OU 10-2 Big 12 Champ
7- Ohio St 11-2 Big 10 Champ
8- VT 11-2 ACC Champ

So LSU, UGA and ARK would have no shot of the BCS Play-Off. were they better teams than the other Conf Champs? I'd say Yes they were: How much would the butthurtness level be from the LSU fans when they got left out?

But also if Conf Champ was not a requirment then there could be an all SEC BCS Playoff... I would LMAO at the rest of the conferences..

Absolutely I am. Re-read my post.

In both scenarios I listed, the best team from both divisions were left out of the SEC Championship game. Bama was the best team from the West, and South Carolina was the best team from the East. Neither played in Atlanta.

So, it is certainly possible (as it was this year) for the best team in the conference to not play in the conference championship game. It is also entirely possible that the best team in the country might not win their own division (as was the case this year, too).

ND is no where near as relevant as they used to be. I'd honestly be surprised if they get to keep their AQ status.

While true, Arkansas wasn't all that before BP, and the two Mississippi schools need to wake the frick up, and A&M isn't exactly a juggernaut. And outside of Florida and maybe SC, the East hasn't been impressive in football lately. Adding Missouri didn't make it any tougher.

Not valid IMO... How many teams do each of those sports get into the playoff...

And NBC still exclusively airs their games every year. ND will never lose what they once were. Classic example of the brand being worth way more than the product.

I think ND should join a conference(can you say lame10?). I do think that you should win your conference to be considered, but also have 2 spots set aside for say someone else from a conference that is ranked top 5.
