Before firing, why don’t teams actually have their next coach in the queue?

Public coaching searches have so much potential for embarrassment, bad press, and infighting that I can’t believe any team would fire their coach without having - at least - an agreement with the next guy.

Why do they do this to themselves?

Because a job fulfillment search with a coach still on the payroll looks worse.
And could lead to worse consequences (internal sabotage, no one wanting to work for a place that treats employees that way, etc..)

Because everyone from the common street fan to the President of most schools is complete trash

Luckily Alabama isn't so shitty from top to bottom

Easy. They try to backchannel and get Cristobal’d. Target coach says oh wow, yeah fire your coach and I’ll sign. Oh wait, my university bumped my salary. So I’m going to stay, but good luck!

says a fan of a school who hasn’t had a coaching search in almost 15 years. Y’all looked like everyone else for a long time during these types of times until Saban fell into your laps. Even that coaching search was publicly comical until the inth hour after Rich Rod turned you down.

Auburn tried that once.
It was a worse failure than this current colossal embarrassment, when the news that an Auburn jet flew to Louisville in the middle of night to offer Tubbervilles job to Perino.
Good times!

I have never followed a LSU coaching search but LSU has won 3 natty's in what, 17 years, with 3 different coaches???

Whatever LSU does is what anyone not named Bama should do....

Didn’t Bama have an opening for months before Saban finally said yes?

Maybe it is the school and the talent in the state that help make the coach, not the other way around!

The state and university even made LES MILES successful.

I think the writing is on the wall and is clear as a fricking bell....in the absence of a savant like Saban....and only a fool would discount his success as anything other than an un-human level of attention to detail and an all consuming biological need to succeed like no one ever has before....that is is absolutely about the program and its geographical location. LSU and Auburn both are current examples....Nebraska used to be....Alabama has also been an example in the past. Florida, Miami, both examples....except UF did have a Sabanesque coach for most of theirs....and of course FSU was another Sabanesque situation. Ohio State is a LSU example....Clemson is yet to be determined but I think most would agree Dabo is more to do with their success than the program....

I ain't no fan of LSU by any stretch but LSU is proof that a dedicated program in a talent rich state can be succesful with just about anyone coaching.....

There is no truth to the rumor Jimmy Sexton has turned down the AU job.

Some schools think they are a top tier job when in reality they are the 3rd best job in their own state.

A lot of coaches will not listen to a school if the position is still filled. There is somewhat of an honor among coaches to not interview for a job that is not open. I think they put feelers out with agents to see if certain people would be interested in talking.

then why did the university fire him?

Clue: Nick Saban made your program successful. That's why there were no titles between the 1950s till he arrived.

and his personality obviously lends itself well to recruiting. He's the best recruiter in the game, and especially in this day and age, recruiting elite players is probably the single most important responsibility of a coaching staff.

38 Days...late November to early January

I would say that was adequate time to hire the GOAT though.

Do you think Auburn’s gonna hire anyone close to Saban’s caliber?

An asst AD at a SEC school told me almost every big SEC school has a "crash list"...meaning a replacement HC list if something tragic happens to the HC or he just fails miserably and its updated annually.

Doesn't mean they'll get those guys but most have an idea before the trigger is pulled.

BTW this was about 20 years but I'm assuming it's still true.
