Currently the conferences are pigeon-holed into a specific model. New legislation threatens to open all 5 conferences up to all sorts of self serving moves.
And why is that bad? Do what's best for your conference. If it's to keep the current model, then do it. If it's to go a different route, then do that.

Dropping divisional play, locking in 3 permanent opponents for each team, and rotating the other 10 keeps the rivalries worth keeping and provides for a home-and-home against every conference opponent every four years.
It's the best of all worlds.
It's the best of all worlds.

After the first week of June 2010, these schools were available for P5 membership
Big East
Connecticut, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, West Virginia, Temple, Cincinnati, Louisville, and South Florida
Mountain West
Air Force, BYU, Utah, and TCU
Conference USA
Memphis, Tulane, Houston, ECU, and Central Florida
Independent
Notre Dame, Army, and Navy
2010 - Utah was the first to go, but in theory, if the B12 knows they are staying together, they have the 1st shot at Utah yet they sit on their hands and do nothing.
2011 - over 1 year later TAMU announces they are leaving and B12 lets a month go by before the ACC snatches up Pittsburgh and Syracuse. About a month later the B12 invites TCU when schools outside the footprint are still available. In late October Mizzou bolts and the next day the B12 invites West Virginia.
2012 - In September Notre Dame goes ACC and a month later Maryland and Rutgers go B1G wile the ACC adds Louisville to replace Maryland.
Nope, looking at the information above, they killed themselves by doing nothing in 2010 and losing the CCG option.
