I've often wondered about the distinction between minors and top level college ball, i.e. why players take one path or the other and how the experience compares.

As far as level of talent and competition, would SEC compare favorably with Rookie League, A, AA, etc? Since it's rare to go from college straight to the majors, I assume AAA is too high. What is the comparison, though?

I'd say Rookie League/A ball. AA, AAA and Indy Leauges have former major league players or players about to go into MLB and can play right away.

Now the fan attendance is on par with AA/AAA.

Most sec teams are neck in neck talent wise as the Kansas City Royals

No. Youre BEST college players may start in AA and then go up/down accordingly. I think Waccha started in AA and quickly went to AAA and then the bigs and know that he is a huge exception.

The needs of the club dictate how fast a player goes up along with the talent. Both have to meet in aggreement.

Even SEC ball is as a whole well below even A.

In general, no.

That said, I could see where SEC teams with top-shelf pitching talent (e.g., Price at Vandy, Nola at LSU) could compete w/ AA teams short term.

It's definitely comparable to say AA. State used to play a minor league team back in the 80's and had success.

Careful. You'll get ridiculed here for even fostering the discussion.

Depends on how you look at it.

Talent may be a drop off but the season is a major plus.

College baseball peaks in the spring and early summer when weather is nicer and you can get a good breeze at a game. Shortened season means you can attend most of the games without tying up your whole summer.

Pro baseball has to damn many games and many are in July and August when it is hot a Hades and I would rather be in some nice creek fishing with some cool beers chilling in the water and me napping under a big fat shade tree.

No cell phone
No TV
No SO with a "honey do" list

I have done my share of ant work in my life, now it is time to be the grasshopper for a few years.

Please, that means you're putting SEC on par with rookie league ball... which is absurd.

Somewhere between A and AA IMO.

Whether it is or isn't is debatable. At least as is pertains to where a hs kid would be playing if he went straight to the minors. You do see a lot more high rated kids decide to go play college ball over the years though. SEC pitching is really good and the overall experience is much more enjoyable. SEC vets usually make a pretty quick jump to the majors too.

Dead heat with AA. College players would be very much on par with wooden bats. I've seen enough AA and college ball to make this claim.

I wouldn't say "well below." A notch below. There ate certainly players playing in the SEC right now that are well above Single A.

I will say I vacation in Cape Cod every summer and usually catch a couple of games in their Summer league and those guys really seem to struggle with the wood bats.Pitching pretty much dominates and those guys are some of the best college ball players in the country.

I would estimate the upper SEC teams are on part with Low A as a whole, but have players who would be studs in High A.

The biggest jump for players in the minors is the jump from high A to AA. AA is where you find out who is a prospect and who isn't.

Bull--fricking---shite. That's why players like Mikie Mahtook and PLENTY of others hit like 70-100 points lower than they did in the SEC.

AA is where the prospects are determined. Every now and then a pitcher can fly thru the minors a la Wacha and Nola. But almost non-existent for hitters.

No. SEC might be around low A ball on a talent average. I've worked advance scouting on enough minor league games to make this claim.

It must seem that way to A&M jumping up from the Big 12 to the SEC, so I'll let the OP slide. Yes, you're in the big show now Aggies.
