Internally there were problems
I thoroughly expected this team this past year to finish with 1 or 2 losses at the 1st of the year (didn't feel as confident as I did say going into 2011 or even this year in the defense especially) and a lot of the pieces on D grew and developed a lot more than I thought it would and everyone looks up and Bama was undefeated heading into the Iron Bowl. The staff still had a major monkey on its back that might not have been evident but it was there and boiled over at the end of the year and after the year had ended.
A change was made, Saban almost left almost solely because of what he lost when former AD Mal Moore passed away. The relationship they had with each other was very important to Saban. Battle really doesn't have a say last time I checked and Mal (R.I.P.) understood that.

That sounds reasonable, particularly your point about Mal Moore. No one mentioned that during the Texas ordeal but I should see his death playing a role in Saban's decisions to stay or go
