What Brian Kelly did with LSU's roster situation is essentially the model any major program with a coaching change should follow. DeBoer is going to have to get in the portal like a dumpster diving raccoon any time it is open.
Kelly eventually got his traditional recruiting leveled out with an exceptional class this cycle. However, he was definitely prioritizing "this year" roster management focus in the portal in his first two years.

Freeman took over a team with one loss while BK took over a team that was .500 and they have essentially the same record since.

I mean we've had this discussion before, I broke down the roster for you and my numbers are backed up both the 247 team talent composite as well as the numbers of players taken in the portal and recruiting class.
There was only one player that "opted out" of the bowl and returned the next season and I believe maybe two that were injured and didn't play.

Maybe another 15 players that were on scholarship for the bowl game but did not participate.
14 of the bowl game participants played their last game as tigers in that bowl game.
So yes, Brian Kelly did inherit a roster with fewer than 40 players.

LSU never had 85 scholarship players in 2022, and we signed 32.

He hit the 10 win mark on the heels of Orgeron decimating the program and leaving him 39 scholarship players.
If Deboer can’t get Gump U to 10 wins right after Saban, you either have to be very concerned in his ability, or you must acknowledge that Kelly is a much better coach.
This one’s gonna be tricky for yall to navigate after shitting on Kelly for two years.
