much tougher today with scholarship restrictions and with more schools have athletic budgets that can compete with the big boys. Bear was great and he may have very well done it in today's game but SABAN is better because of the era.

Different eras; the games were different, but Coach Saban is close and/or equal to Coach Bryant.
In Coach Bryant's day, they played about 10 games a year and you got invited to a bowl game (which there were only a few). There were no conference divisions or conference championship game. The national championship was decided before the bowl games, which were mainly just rewards for a good year. That changed in the late 60's, early 70's.
Now, in Coach Saban's day, the SEC is divided into divisions and a conference championship game is played. 12 to 14 games are played each year depending on playing for the conference championships and the national championship.
The BCS brought in the playoff system by having #1 and #2 play for the national championship. Saban did this 4 times and won all 4 (3 at Bama, 1 at LSU). Saban is the only coach to have won national championships at 2 different schools. Bryant only played the #1 team twice; #1 Penn State in 1979 which he won, and #1 Neb. in 1972 which he lost.
Both won AP back to back national championships, CB twice and CS once.
Bryant has Saban beat in the conference championships. CB won 14 SEC championships (1 at Kentucky, 13 at Alabama). He also won a SWC championship while at Texas A&M. CS has won 4 conference championships (2 at LSU, 2 at Alabama). Bryant did not have to play a conference championship game. Saban and Bryant are the only coaches to win an SEC championship at two different schools.
Bryant has 14 10+ win seasons; Saban has 9 10+ win seasons

Another title or two, and Saban may surpass Bryant's resume, considering the eras.
But Saban will never be as beloved as Bryant, who played there and coached there for decades.

It's going to be impossible for anyone to top the Bear.
Nick needs:
12 more SEC titles
3 more national championships
Beat Auburn 10 times in a row

I and I know tons other LSU fans who respect Bear Bryant.

I've never understood why Coach Thomas always gets overlooked in these great coaches discussions. All he did was compile a .812 WP, win 4 SEC's, one natty and went to 2 Rose Bowls.
I dare say that at most schools, the stadium would be named after him, even in the SEC with the possible exceptions of Florida and Tennessee.

what does saban have to do, in your minds, to get to the bears' level and surpass it.
Coach Saban has to beat Auburn 10 times in a row to surpass Coach Bryant who beat Auburn 9 times in a row. Funny, I don't remember Bear Bryant running around holding his fingers up.

If Saban played under the same SEC Championship rules as Bryant he would have won SEC Championships in:
2008
2009
2012
2013
It's hard to compare their SEC championships.

Both legacies extend beyond the university. In small company for GOAT conversation.

Two different eras and two different legacies.
Bryant will forever be admired as a larger than life figure in the South. His record on the field was tremendous and, as others have posted, he was the spokeman for the South in a time when every team, person, school needed that figure.
Saban will forever be known for creating a dynasty in CFB when that should not happen, given the scholarship limits, etc. For him to do what he has in this day and age of parity, conference championships, 13 game schedules, etc is remarkable and likely not repeated for a while.
So to me at least, they are both legends and both will forever be in the conversation as two of the greatest to ever roam a college football sideline.

I've long been of the opinion that Saban has done what he's done in a much more difficult era than Bryant's. But, as others have noted, Bryant will never be surpassed in terms of the way the majority of fans think about him.
Everyone listing Bryant's achievements has yet to note what I consider his greatest. Bryant won titles in 1961, 1964, and 1965. He was snubbed of another in 1966. After that, the Tide had a drop off in the late 60s, falling all the way to 6-5 by 1969. Bryant then reinvented himself by installing the wishbone and won 3 more national titles in the 70s.

Bear pretty much made Bama what it is. Saban would have to be here a long time to surpass bear.

Never double down on stupid.
Alabama's longest win streak over Auburn was 9 consecutive years, 1973-1981. In was in all the papers and on TV and radio.
If you know of a different, 10-year streak that has mysteriously gone undocumented, please give the dates.
Actually winning games is not like claiming MNCs.

Heed your own advice, dude. Read his post...he never said the Bear won 10 straight. He inferred that Saban would have to beat AU 10 straight to top the Bear...
