Didn't bama play teams like UCLA and Hawaii under Shula?

FWIW, that'd be probably the coolest away trip IMO.

eta: I remember H/H with OKLA too

GTFO with the "all in" phrase, that's Au's trademark.

The money is too much to pass up.
It's not all about the money, though that helps. With Saban, it's about recruiting. To play in these big NFL stadiums against a big name team is alluring to recruits. Also these stadiums are usually located in recruit-rich states and large cities, like Georgia/Atlanta and Dallas/Texas.

This article from last year is interesting. It talks about how the teams give up tickets sales from home games to play in these neutral site games. LINK

quote:

Neutral site games have proven to be extremely lucrative for the teams participating in them. When teams venture to the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, GA for the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Classic or AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX for the Cowboys Classic teams are typically giving up a lot; not only are they missing out on a potential home game, but they also lose all the revenues associated with hosting a home game such as ticket sales and concession sales. In addition, the surrounding area loses out on the revenues it usually makes when thousands of fans and alumni come into town for game day weekend. As such, payouts from these neutral site games have seemingly been enough to persuade teams to miss out on these potential earnings.

This year, Alabama vs Wisconsin will probably make about $4 million. The contract for Alabama's 2016 opener against USC, also in Arlington, states the school will receive $6.5 million. LINK

Alabama vs FSU payout should be about $4-5 million. LINK

Charts showing some payouts....

There was no rule that said they couldn't. And Hawaii got to come to Bryant Denny a few years later.

Played at Hawaii 2002 and 2003. Hawaii came to Bryant Denny in 2006.

I have a lot of respect for Alabama doing this.

In 2016 they open against USCw.

Sounds like Oregon and some other high profile team in the future too.

Too much guaranteed money with these neutral site games.

This.

You could very well make much more money in a home and home, but these guaranteed payouts work as a sort of time hedge (or theta hedge for options traders). By that I mean we generally don't know how a either team will be in a specific year in the future, so the guaranteed money makes these deals so nice. Definitely worked in Bama's favor with the VT game.

I wasn't knocking it. Just stating why they did it. I think it was a great idea.

Alabama is guaranteed at least 1 million more than their opponent for the 2019 game. It's all about the money.
