Several different travel agencies sold tickets +flights + hotels but didn't have enough tickets. Bunch of Auburn fans found this out upon arrival and purchased tickets in Phoenix for outrageous prices because they'd already gotten there. A couple in my friend group had their flights and hotel rooms reimbursed so they spent that money on tickets outside of the stadium.

Tickets were oversold. Stubhub in particular could not fulfill the orders and started buying tickets back at 1.5x - 2xs the rate to fulfill for others

Those numbers look super inflated. For LSU/Bama in NOLA in 2011, there were tons of tix for $700-$1000 per seat.

Yes, but tickets being sold before game time are not going to be included. It's just the transaction price for tickets purchased on their website I would guess.

The Auburn-Oregon game was infamous because it was one of the few times in history that Stubhub pulled all tickets for a game on its website due to certain high profile brokers admitting they did not have enough tickets to meet the demand they had advertised. Stubhub was going around offering fans twice the price they paid if they would sell them back to stubhub so they could fulfill orders.

Scarcity is a major price-point factor.

Stubhub's numbers are quite a bit different:

• 2016: Clemson vs. Alabama in Arizona -- $675
• 2015: Oregon vs. Ohio State in Texas -- $807
• 2014: Florida State vs. Auburn in California -- $889
• 2013: Alabama vs. Notre Dame in Florida -- $1,640
• 2012: Alabama vs. LSU in Louisiana -- $1,808
• 2011: Auburn vs. Oregon in Arizona -- $1,154

Extreme shorting of tickets on secondary market sites like Stubhub. It got so bad that Stubhub themselves were offering to buy back tickets from Stubhub buyers at 2.5 times what they paid for them to cover the needed supply as game day approached.

True, but it just seems like forever since the Michigan State game. Before the playoffs they had the other BCS bowls more spread out than NY6. I love having all the main bowls back around NY Eve and NY like it used to be, but then having the final on the 11th seems like forever.

It's like fricking all night without getting off and then waiting 11 days and then picking up where you left off to get your nut.

These make more sense with these being the top 3.

One is between two of the top programs in CFB history, another is a once in a lifetime game, at the time, and then you have one where the game is within driving distance of both teams.

Good. No one should spend that kind of money for a game.

Yeah, the AU Oregon demand was ridiculous. Ticket brokers could not even deliver what they had promised and were scrambling the days before the game. Google it. A pair of tickets was going for 10k the day before the game.

My wife and I went to the game in New Orleans because it was only 3-4 hour drive and we could better absorb the price of the tickets but I won't shell out those kind of bucks for a game when the cost would cover a pretty nice vacay for the whole family somewhere. In Santa Clara for work this week so I'll probably find somewhere to watch it.

I can tell you this is incorrect. You could not find them for sub $1k right before Christmas and they werent under 1500 on Christmas day

I suspect that the vast majority of these stubhub sales were in early to mid december before the market went crazy. The relatively few outliers after that were the ones that got all the attention.

I wish I would have purchased then
