Malzahn at Tulsa didn't have a returning starter but his QB for his second year was a backup who learned from Malzahn. I doubt that Tulsa had back to back 5000 yd passers just because two QBs fell into his lap.
At AU, he took Chris Todd and set some QB records with him, he and Cam exceeded all expectations, QB talent in 2011 was awful and we still pulled out 8 wins then Nick Marshall was a converted DB who did well.
I don't think he is some elite QB guru but he seems to work wonders with the QB position consistently so I got to believe

Maybe I am mistaken but didn't Marshal play QB at a JUCO for a year after his dismissal from UGA?

Yes but he played DB at UGA.
