Tray Matthews didn't get the shot he wanted at his former team.

The former Georgia safety, who transferred to Auburn in the 2014 offseason, did not appear in the Tigers' 20-13 loss to Georgia on Saturday. An ankle injury forced him to miss his second consecutive game.

"All of the straight-ahead stuff is fine," Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp said. "When he starts moving and changing direction, it creates some pain for him. He wanted to play in the game. That was our decision."

Matthews played at Georgia, where he famously had a hand in one of the greatest Auburn plays in history near the end of the 2013 season. Matthews and Josh Harvey-Clemons collided and Harvey-Clemons tipped the pass in the air on fourth-and-18, allowing Ricardo Louis to catch the pass for a 73-yard touchdown fans have deemed the Prayer at Jordan-Hare.

Matthews practiced sparingly last week. "He wanted to (play), but he wasn't healthy enough to go," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. The decision to not play Matthews was made by the coaches, with advice coming from the medical staff.

"There's no doubt Tray wanted to go play as a competitive young man," Muschamp said. "He's a good football player. Again, it's our medical staff does a fantastic job and feel like he was totally ready to go in the game -- very limited the last two weeks practicing. Hopefully he'll continue to turn the corner here and be able to go this week."

The sophomore could get two more opportunities to play the Bulldogs in 2016 and 2017.

He battled a hamstring injury in preseason drills and has 36 tackles and one interception in seven games. Opelika native Stephen Roberts started in his place Saturday against Georgia and finished with seven tackles.

Matthews was dismissed June 3, 2014 by Georgia coach Mark Richt following a classroom incident that came on the heels of a March arrest for theft by deception.

Auburn (5-5, 2-5 SEC) hosts Idaho (3-7) on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT on the SEC Network.

Why does he need a shot? He played well for us for the most part, broke the rules and got the consequences. It's not like he was mistreated or anything.

6 games (out of 13) with 36 tackles and 1 interception.

I mean I guess that's "playing well", for a true freshman anyway, but it's not that big a help if you can only play in half the games.

Considering he was a true freshman, I thought he played well. Everyone remembers him for that one play against Auburn, but I thought he did a great job for us all things considered.

My point stands - it's not like he has to get retribution for anything.

He has battled a shoulder injury since the 1st game. He has played relatively well when on the field.

He is a 2nd year player. How is that a knock on him?
